Deuling submitted a new Build:

Deuling's 1985 K5. "Operation Revamp"

EDIT: Since this thread has way to much talking in it, just go here for the summary

http://www.silverlakeforum.com/index.php/topic,20956.0.html

Picked it up at fall last year or so, just kinda been slowly fixin stuff here and their, and dropped a 408 sbc in it, new shocks, nothing too fancy.

Plans:

-Build the tranny
-Rip apart interior, bedline everything
-Paint eventually
-Eventually a bigger rear axle
-Either 4" and 33's or 6" and 35s

At the moment im super broke, so little stuff going on for now.

But befor I start I want everyone to see the inspiration for it..

My dads 90 Jimmy back in the day when I was a little kid, I LOVED THAT THING!!!

And the first time I ever drove on the dunes in the 91 Burb

My dad had an 86 jimmy with the 6.2, then the black jimmy, then bought a 91 burb with the black and silver color scheme. So Ive always had one of these trucks around me, and when he sold the burb, I needed one back.... lol.

Had a 305, it was makin lots of weird noises, getting 6-7 mpgs, piece of junk had to go...

DSCF9588.jpg

So began the very long process of finding a good engine, ended up talking to a buddies friend that has been building them for a while, he saw a post I put on FB of a 350 crate on CL a guy wanted $900 for. He said he could build me a 408 that he had already bored out with no home for the same price and that I would know I was getting a good motor and not just something somebody coulda slapped some chrome and paint on. So I said go with it:thumb:

Started tearing the 305 out at my bossed house, he has a nice work shop with swivel hoist and pit (shhh dont say anything bout the pit :waytogo:)

After months of waiting I finally got pics of the 408. 400 sbc Bored .040 over, summit 1103 cam(dont recall specs at the moment), new everything plus stainless steel roller rockers, polished alluminum oil pan, pro street harmonic balancer, edelbrock performer rpm, edelbrock 1406 carb (off the 305), stock heads completely rebuilt by some race engine builder in Mt. Pleasant MI. Nothing too fancy, just new and 408 SBC just sounds cool:thumb:. It was $900 for the rebuild plus another $400 with roller rockers, cam, oil pan. So $1200 for new motor not bad at all.

Out with the old, in with the new

DSCF9723.jpg

Then I made my $4XX order from summit. Royal purple break in oil, royal purple synthetic 15w40, thermostat, spark plugs, motor mounts, Stainless Pypes Performance Violators, and WIX filters:bow:

This motor will run Royal Purple as long as im around:thumb:

DSCF9730.jpg

Yeah, they are loud:thumb:

DSCF9749.jpg

Ended up not being able to run the valve covers I had because they were hitting on the roller rockers. Picked these up, with the Felpro steel insert gaskets they no leak (highly recomend these gaskets for valve covers and oil pan)

Then judgement day arrived... BREAK IN DAY:eek1:

Well went to fire it up, lots of fire and boom sounds out of the open headers:eek1:, checked compression in #1 cylinder and found out the Dist was 180* off, spun it around fired right up............ Then the radiator blew up and blew about a gallon of water all over everything..:doah:

Went home all bummed out and started looking up radiators, my buddy stayed the night and was bored searching craigslist when he found a scottsdale for sale with a 2.25" core Northern alluminum rad with internal and external tranny cooler. Called the guy, he said he paid $400 for it new, put it in then his engine blew a month later and he wanted half of what he paid.

Picked it up next morning for $200:woot:

Went down and installed. Its sexy:thumb:

Had fun at the dunes and it performed great. Love it.

I also installed rough country nitro 9000's all the way around.

I put a new top on somewhere in their as well, the old one was pretty beat up and lots of cracked windows

Pretty much it for the time being, I bought all new carpet that will be going in this winter, along with bedlining everything I possibly can, welding up and rust in the floor I find, and slowly bring this thing back to life.

No burnout action really, got one pic of one I left in the college parking lot..:waytogo:

This engine is night and day from the 305, I had to get used to the pedal at first so I didnt rip the ol 10 bolt out:thumb: Also it gets better mileage which is a plus, and when I get a qjet I should get even more out of it.

Heck yah dave, stoked for a ride in the maiden:thumb: What could be better, michigan sand, freshwater, and awesome rigs everywhere you look on a busy weekend.

I'll keep it short and simple. Good build up, pretty motor, beautiful truck, good looking ole lady but do you wanna borrow my hair clippers to trim that mane up a bit?:pimp:

How long did it take ya to swap out the hubs?

Lol you talkin her hair or mine?? Thats not very good pics of her, I got some betta ones but you guys cant see:rolleyes:.

And the hubs, well the one side took about 10 min, the other side... well all 6 bolts stripped and I broke a hardened bit off in one so I couldnt drill the bolt out so I sawzalled the hole hub off lol. After that it was a cake walk.

Talking about your hair, but if you decide to trim hers take pics and video. :D

How you liking the warns? I'm in the process of doing that myself.

Oh heck my hairs short in those pictures man:pimp:

I like em, got a killer deal on the set for $40 for the set. I really like the quarter turn to lock them in, and the look and feel compared to the mile markers is much better. Much beefier. They worked at the dunes great.

just realized you got the same cam as me, i love mine, nice rompy idle even in a stock 8.5:1 350.

Yah I really like it, just like everything on this truck so far its a good medium, not too much but not too little. Next engine ill go bigger though:thumb:
