Dex-cool???

my 96 tahoe

had the green stuff in it when i bought it in nov. '04, the previous owner followed all the maintanance and carried it to the dealership for this maintanance. my local dealer has all the records on file of what was done to my truck...one of them being a coolant flush and refill and they put the green stuff in it. i asked them about it because i bought an extended warranty with the truck and they told me it was ok ,as i was worried, because it said to use dex-cool only. they said they had had alot of problems with the dex-cool, didn't say what kind of problems but did say it had problems...

and they also told me the green and orange together would gel!..the previous owner was a woman pharmacist and took it there for everything ...recalls she got in mail and such, as she was original owner...therefor i have the daytime running lights which most people say wasn't on 96 models. the dealership said it was a recall item that was added while she owned the truck along with some other recall stuff that i'm not sure of the nature

....glad i got the warranty tho, best $1700 i ever spent...they have rebuilt the transfercase, the transmission, the rearend, new bearings in the front end, new intake gaskets and i even made them put new door hinge pins and bushings, as my doors sagged when you opened them, they argued that was a wear item. i got my coverage manual out, that i got with my warranty and it stated door hinges were covered, i knew they were as they told me the warranty was the same as on a new vehicle bumper to bumper....they even have recharged my air condition 3 times , the last time putting in some sort of dye,..they can not find the leak...any1 else have or had this problem? as it needs recharging again!

it is a warranty just like a new truck, bumper to bumper everthing except belts and brake pads....even the water pump is covered. wish my motor would go out before my warranty, so i could get a new engine, but i've seen sbc's go 300,000 miles when taken care of...so i guess i got them for most everything i can but heck they have rebuilt almost my entire truck and it has never been off road by me or previous owner the bottom side is as pretty and white as the topside, thats what my '80 k-5 is for going off road.

it had 86,900 miles on it when i bought it and i bought a 4 yr 48,000 mile warranty for it, as i said, glad i did, i have a $50 deductible whenever anything goes wrong plus i get a loaner...the transfercase bill itself was almost what i paid for the warranty, and get this..they told me it broke because it had not been in 4wd enuff. a gear has a spring under compression while in 2wd and the snap ring that holds it broke and it started to try and lock in while going down the road, i realized what was happening and went ahead and put it in 4 hi and took it to the dealership..my front tires chirped around corners on the way there...do these trucks have the front end locked? or was it because it was broke that both front tires were trying to remain turning at the same speed causing the chirps around corners? it has the push button 4wd and they told me to lock it in about once a month to relieve the tension on the snap ring so it wouldn't work harden and snap again!

i'm covered to 134,900, and have searched on the internet for warranties to see if i could keep it under a warranty and found several companies that will extend it as long as you don't let it go out of warranty, you can get a 12/12,000 all the way up to a 5yr/72,000. the latter is about $1600 for bumper to bumper. has any1 ever dealt with these aftermarket warranty companies, its just hard to believe i can keep a bumper to bumper warranty on my truck all the way to 206,900 miles, be nice if i could! but i'm a little scared of the next warranty, but if it's like what i have, it possibly would be worth it! warranty up to and past 200,00. just un heard of! but they say they can and wil do it.

That was long and odd. It seams to me that if you actualy spoke that whole think you wouldn't have taken a breath.

And I don't think I will ever have a problem with the dex cool. I have even had a vehical I bough that had green mixed with the red. I never had one single problem with it. It was that way for about 4 years that I had it. I just recently flushed the system and there was no gunk in the system. I guess it is just in how you take care of the vehical.

I too had a AC leak. A shop near me had an advertised special before summer, and I stopped in. They put in the dye, and I came back a few days later. It was around some connection... not sure, but the guy said it was very common for that year range. He said it was a 10 dollar part, and it's usually the problem 9 times out of 10, for that year range. I let them replace it and re-charge the system for a total of about 15-20 bucks. Down here.. that's money well spent. :thumb:

honestly 3 years is pretty good on a set of intake gaskets

WTF,,,Are you insane ???,,The crap Detroit builds today is JUNK,,When was the last time anyone with the old school SBC and BBC's needed to replace a set of intake gaskets just to repair a water leak?

I've pried off intakes off of old engine 15 + years old that had the OEM gaskets on them.

All of this plastic and composite bull**** is what is causing most of today's engine problems in the cooling systems. Plastic radiator tanks,,plastic intake plenums,,plastic intake gaskets,,

I have a 97 yukon that the intakes gaskets failed at 40,000 miles,I changed them myself and could not believe all the plastic junk the beloved small block was made out of,,

you can say what you want about the old iron but it makes me wonder why so much of it is still around today, while today's crap is being recycled allready.

Good luck with the warranty, I thought most of them would only cover a vehicle to 100K miles, if you wanted coverage beyond that, it cost you a great deal more. Not sure though, as I had a bad experience with an extended warranty, the company declared bankruptcy and all of the legal matters involved with it were handled by a foreign court as the company was headquartered in the Cayman Islands, this was an extended warranty sold to my wife (before we were married) by a GM dealership.

As far as the antifreeze, I still have the orange dex cool in both the 98 pickup and 98 Tahoe we have. Both of them had the intake gaskets replaced around 90K miles or so, and the pickup needed a new water pump around 100K, other than that, no issues whatsoever, both of them cool just fine, even when pulling the trailer.

That is one of the biggest problems with extended warranties. The issuer goes out of business and you get nothing for your money.

Yeah, it really sucked when the fuel pump went out on the 98, had it towed to the dealer, and they called later and told me the warrranty company refused to authorize repairs. I called them up and was told they couldn't authorize anything since they were being audited in preparation for liquidation due to bankruptcy.

I immediately called the dealership who sold the warranty and chewed them out, and they kept telling me it would just take sometime to straighten out and the warranty would be honored. So, I finally got the dealership who sold the warranty to pay the dealership where the truck was (over 2 hours away) since they sold a warranty that was not being honored.

I don't think they have collected there money yet from the warranty company over two years later.

Well.....those stories are horrivle.............I just flushed my system out about a year ago and thinned the fluid out.....

ooohhh btw...there is a class action lawsuit on this.......ijust do a Google search

hmmmm

horror stories like that is what is keeping me from gettin the "next" warranty....the 1 i have now was only available because my truck had under 100k....i bought the longest 1 that warrantied me beyond 100k...i did some research and found some companies that would reup my warranty as long as i didn't let the 1 i have run out first..they actually called me on the phone and i told them i had about 8-10k left on my current warranty and they told me to recontact them when i have about 500 miles left and they would offer me warranty from 12/12 all the way to 5 yr/72,000 as long as i never let the truck go without warranty, but i just don't see how they can actually do this...i was weary of the warranty i have now but like i said they have almost rebuilt my whole truck....but the next company would have more to deal with due to the increase in mileage, more stuff start going wrong...i think i will just be happy that my current warranty did all that they did and leave it at that

3 years on intake gaskets is crap. I have a 74 model 350 in my 57 chevy truck, and it still has the factory intake gaskets on it, 30 years and still working fine. the only gaskets i've had to change so far were the valve covers. They just don't build'em like they used to.
