Diamond in the Rough

Any updates on this rig or more pics? Just thought of it and your 14 bolt s/f swap. If I were to look for one for my rig, where would I find it? Which year vehicles had them? I'm contemplating building an axle over the winter along with a completely new interior. I should start a build thread, but will only do that when stuff actually starts happening

Does look cool for the price.

The very 1st pic the front tire looks back into the fender well more than normal.

looks real nice indeed.for that price, youd usually have the body half rotted off and missing one of the drivetrain components.

I think it is just that the steering is turned slightly.

I have a CUCV K5 that is rotted in the usual places. The blue K5 is solid and original. I sure can appreciate that after working on the rusty one.

Man, its tough just to find one rust free here in the rust belt. That cheap is a steal. Well scored, my friend. Well scored indeed.

Thanks. It was luck more than anything. I sure was not expecting what it was for that price. It is amazing how things add up though. I would say that I am up to about $2000 into it now.

These axles were in the early 90s Chevy light duty 3/4 tons (2wd and 4wd). You might be able to find one using car-part.com. Expect to do some brake work.

Updates are that I have been driving it and enjoying it. One thing I am not excited about is the 3.42 gear ratio and 33s. The engine runs great but the tranny shifts down alot because of the gearing.

That's what I have now too, 3.42's and 33's, I just recently put my 31's back on (winters) and what a difference it makes. I may step down to 32's to replace the summer 33's unless I decide to lift the truck, then I'll probably upgrade the gearing. But for now it works good.

Thanks for the info on the axle, brother. I'll keep a lookout for one to work on. The narrowness of the stock rear axles bugs me especially when I run the 31s

Between the gearing of the 3.42s/33s combo and the recent availability of a set of axles out of a 1990 3/4 ton Burb with 4.10s, the decision to swap axles has been made. I have a set of H2s with stock tires about half worn and I am guessing that they are at a 34" ride height now. 34" tires with 4.10s should be good I hope. And the axles are a bolt in item IIRC. Hoping to be able to tow with it when it is done.

I'm running H2s, 35s, and 4.10s. So far so good. I don't live in the hills of NH though. And have not tried to tow with it yet. It has plenty of get up and go but I think I really want 4.56s to tow with. There's a link in my sig if you want an idea what yours will look like.

I have H2's with the stock style tires, BFG A/T's, and 4.10 gears with the 700r4 trans.

It works, but would be better with 4.56. It'll still hunt out of overdrive on the slightest hill, but is pretty decent for longer flat land driving.

Towing, it does fine, spends alot of time in 3rd, OD again, only on the flat lands.

Thanks for the link. That looks like the stance I am going after.

Sounds alot like what is going on now with the 3.42/33 setup. Thinking I will switch to 285 when the original h2 tires wear out.

Yup

i put my tranny in 3rd gear when towing anything with my blazer.that way it doesnt hunt gears 4.10 and 35s will work well in most situations except towing.you will still get lockup on the tc in 3rd,but it will use a lil more gas.i dont see too much difference.maybe a couple mpg.plus its not putting more stress on the 4th overdrive gear when towing and hunting the gears so much.
