Did I just blow a transmission?

700 R4 with only 16,000 miles on it - rebuild from Monster Transmission. I was cruising up a hill about 40mph, not towing anything, and suddenly it was if I shifted into neutral. Lost all gears, forward and reverse. No slipping beforehand whatsoever. Fluid level is fine. Checked that the transfer case didn't slip out of gear, and it seems fine. Can shift into 4 low and it will just barely pull itself if I rev to around 3000 rpm.

I'm no expert on transmissions, so needing some help to diagnose it.....

Sounds like it, possibly the pump went first.

After reading the the title....I was going to say something crude about 700s leaving a bad taste in your mouth. But decided against it. :D

Drop the pan and see how bad it looks metal wise....Might be time to upgrade to a stronger trans.

Might be something simple, like the filter came out and hit the pan,now it cant pump anything...usually you'd hear scary noises for at least a short time if the pump went out,or the input snout on the converter broke,etc..

I've heard more bad than good about the "Monster" transmissions on various forums and word of mouth locally though...good luck..

Hoping it's something this simple.

You are in deep doo-doo when it comes to a broken Monster Transmission. Cut your losses and take it to a decent local trans shop to have it fixed, or you will be out of a truck for a long time, and still never have it fixed. That is why I am going to rebuild my 4L80E trans myself because over the many years of being a mechanic I have found that nobody can be trusted, unless it is something I absolutely cannot do myself (like an exhaust system).

Sounds like the converter took a dump. I have a 96 Impala SS and it has a 4L60E and I just recently had the exact same issue and it was a converter with only 1700 miles on it and it exploded internally without a single noise. I lost all gears but if I revved it to around 4000rpm it would barely move.

did you install a new converter & flush the lines when you installed it...?

Possible pump rotor failure. Check the fluid level, engine shut off, then check again with the engine running, if it is about the same then the pump rotor has failed. If the fluid level is normal when running then possibly a converter spline or input shaft breakage. If it is the transfer case or transmission reaction hub failure it will grind when you select park.

Thanks Greg. I was hoping you would chime in.
I checked the fluid with the engine off and again at idle - the pump is definitely working. No grinding going into park either. So now I'm guessing it's either the torque converter failed similar to 4x4 High's issue, or broken input shaft. Anything else I should take a look at before I pull the transmission?

Maybe try checking the fluid pressures ?...that might help pinpoint where the fault lies..
My automatic trans experience is limited to filter and fluid changes, but I have had luck reviving a few--one TH350 I had in a parts truck I bought with a "blown transmission" did much like your symptoms,no forward or reverse and for a few minutes after a cold start it would try propelling the truck but slipped badly..

After checking the fluid, which was nice and pink and smelled fresh,I went to take the pan off and found a valve body bolt lying in the bottom, several others were loose and backed off..when I put the bolt back in and tightened the rest, the transmission worked again..!

I bought my 81 G-10 pretty cheap when it was only 9 years old when its transmission started refusing to go into third, then it started taking off in first but refused to upshift out of second gear ,and go into third--finally all it had was reverse and first gear, but it never slipped....it turned out to be just the nylon govenor gear was stripped of its teeth..
I put a used govenor from a junkyard trans in it and I put over 40,000 miles on it..

A friend with a 700R4 told me he lost "all gears" and had to be towed in to a shop--they did a pressure test, found it wasn't correct, and found the valve body gasket had blown out in one spot, also said the pressure regulator valve was dirty, the screen on it was blocked up with some crud..
He lucked out,for 150 bucks they got the transmission working, and its held up so far..the shop admitted though, most of the time a 700R4 comes in "broken" it has internal parts cracked or burnt up..

I often wonder how many transmissions that fail without any noises or evident damage, end up just being scrapped ,without an autopsy being done to see just which thing failed..

wouldn't hurt to at least pull the pan and see if the filter hasn't fallen out of the pump or some other oddity.

You can do some basic trouble-shooting as mentioned above and then off to a shop. A low mileage Monster rebuild failing is not much of a surprise. Guy in our club bought a Monster "heavy duty towing" trans for his work van. He normally rebuilds his own transmissions but a lot of hard parts including the case were trashed so was actually cheaper to order a complete trans. Less than a year in the 2-4 band let go. Instead of paying $400 to send the trans back he just replaced it himself and found the one Monster installed to be a cheap low quality version. Another year later the trans completely died because the converter let go. Again he didn't want to pay $400 to ship the trans back to a company that sent him junk to begin with. Clutch packs and other parts were found to have gotten hot, tolerances were off, parts appeared to be cheap generic base level stuff, etc.... Spent under $600 on all new parts and rebuilt it himself, it's been good for several years now.

Might be worth asking since there has been a lot of discussion on this on some other facebook groups I watch but did you make sure the TV line was properly adjusted when it was all installed by checking the line pressures?

Didn't check line pressures, but set it correctly. No prior slipping, no burnt smell, fluid looks new.... I haven't had a chance to get into it yet, but I'm thinking the converter let go.

Monster sells good kits but build crappy transmissions is pretty much the consensus I've found.

I'm in the middle of a th350 build. Mine did the same thing only this one had unknown miles on it.
