Did I just blow a transmission?

Quick update -
I finally had some time to take a look at it. When I pulled the pan, the filter was laying in it. I thought I had gotten lucky and it was just a matter of installing a new filter and fluid and all would be good. But when I was cleaning up the pan, I noticed a couple of slight wear marks where the filter had been rubbing the pan for some time. I was hoping that maybe the filter had been working loose and finally came completely out, so I went ahead and replaced it and filled with fluid. No luck.... No change whatsoever. Truck will still barely move under its own power. Apparently the filter was loose, but the pan was holding it in place close enough to to still pick up fluid. So I'm back to suspecting the torque converter...

I confirmed that the issue was the torque converter. The hub is broken out of the turbine. I've never been pleased with this converter and I was planning on replacing it anyway, so I cut it open to see what was going on. Looks to me like it had broken before and they did a cruddy job of repairing it when the converter was rebuilt.

It also looks like they bent the fins on the turbine by hand to set them to a new angle.... This will be my last purchase from Monster

That is a replacement hub, they just didn't get a good penetrating weld on it when it was installed. It also looks like the turbine was machined too thin in that area and may have contributed to the failure, there isn't much meat there to begin with. They should have brazed or tig reinforced the fins on the turbine, I'm guessing this was some kind of mass produced part and not a custom built unit.

Kind of a weird coincidence the post above this one is titled "Can a 1990 Suburban 4x4 700R4 transmission tow a vehicle such as a 2001 Crown Vic for 5 hrs ?....

My rig would typically be able to handle a haul like that if it weren't for faulty parts. Obviously this T/C issue was an exception. But with 4:56 gears, heavy duty radiator, oil cooler, and external trans cooler, it does pretty well.

Towing about 4000lbs in this pic - 4 hr trip...
