Did they put 454 TBI\'s in 89-91 Suburbans?

And what tranny/tcase combo did they come with? I'm talking 3/4 ton Burbs.............. /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

Re: Did they put 454 TBI\'s in 89-91 Suburbans?

my spec sheet for 91 shows the 4L80E as the other trans (vs 700R4)...

Re: Did they put 454 TBI\'s in 89-91 Suburbans?

Yes, but they were only available in the 2WD 3/4 ton Subs. The 89 my brother has is a 2WD 3/4ton with the 454 and T-400 trans...I believe they started using the 4L80E sometime in the 90-91 model years...sorry, don't know exactly when.

454's were only available in 3/4-ton, 2WD Suburbans of that era. /forums/images/icons/mad.gif For some reason GM wouldn't sell them with a 454 and a transfer case until the new body style came out in '92 or so. /forums/images/icons/mad.gif

Re: Did they put 454 TBI\'s in 89-91 Suburbans?

Yep, what the others said.....

I have seen literally hundreds of Subs with 454's, but only in the 2wd version. /forums/images/icons/frown.gif

As for the tranny option, th400's were behind all 454's (or 465's if manual) and the 4L80E was only available in '91. /forums/images/icons/wink.gif

Saw an '87 with a 454..............think it was TBI (should be)...............any idea on how common barn doors vs. tailgate option was?

Re: Did they put 454 TBI\'s in 89-91 Suburbans?

The knew suburbans have a 8.1 litter in them basically a 496. next year they are even thinking of putting 502 IN the heavyduty pickup versions as well as the suburban to.

Frank, I believe the barn doors/tailgate were about a 50/50 deal. For every barn door Sub I see, a Sub with a tailgate goes by. So, it's pretty even between the two.

I prefer the barn doors myself. Just don't like the tailgates too much.

If it's a 4WD, then the engine was swapped in. GM just wouldn't let ya order one with 4WD and the 454 back then. /forums/images/icons/mad.gif My '90 has the barn doors. They're pretty handy for getting stuff in or out of the back quickly. But that center beam sure creates one heck of a blind spot! /forums/images/icons/shocked.gif

Re: Did they put 454 TBI\'s in 89-91 Suburbans?

It's a 4WD. I'll have to call him and ask. Pretty sure it said 454 TBI.

Yeah, I like the barn doors myself too.

With your '90, how's the acceleration? Is it underpowered in your opinion? *Not that it matters* but what gas mileage do you get?

Tanks! /forums/images/icons/cool.gif

Re: Did they put 454 TBI\'s in 89-91 Suburbans?

Right now the '90 has a 350 in it that runs VERY strong, but it smokes like mad... /forums/images/icons/frown.gif The air filter got installed improperly by the PO and lots of Colorado dust ate the rings. /forums/images/icons/mad.gif But the price was right... I don't know the mileage yet, as the 454 is still sitting on the engine stand. /forums/images/icons/frown.gif

Even clapped out, the 350 in the '90 will blow the doors off the 350 that's in the '94. /forums/images/icons/confused.gif

Re: Did they put 454 TBI\'s in 89-91 Suburbans?

How about a seat of the pants difference between your TPI Blazer and the 90 Burb? How different is the acceleration? ( I realize gearing/lift/etc. factors in here but want your opinion)

Re: Did they put 454 TBI\'s in 89-91 Suburbans?

The TPI K5 is WAY quicker! /forums/images/icons/shocked.gif But it's got ported heads, nasty cam, larger injectors, headers, duals, etc. Plus it's got the longer stroke of a 383. /forums/images/icons/cool.gif The 'burb just has a bone stock 350 with 159K miles on it (but it still makes more power than the 108K 350 in the '94 'burb!). /forums/images/icons/frown.gif
