Diesel Vs Gas

There is enough just in the northern hemisphere of this continent to keep one busy for life. so in short we plan to stay in North America.

I'd just leave it TBI. Didn't you already do all the upgrades?

I think you may wind up being a bit disasspointed with the TPI system. It is a 25 year old injection system, and it will choke out a 5.7L engine in the upper RPMs in stock form. It is also much more difficult to program for any real power. It sure looks cool though :haha:

At the very least, I would very highly recommend going with an actual 96+ Vortec 5.7L engine and injection system. Its a much newer system with a lot more flexibility in programming. They are also quite fuel efficient, I used to get 18 mpg with one in an extended cab half ton truck.

UH duh, Why didnt i think of that!

So check into a 96+ 5.7 donor truck then. I will look into that, besides I actually prefer OBDII anyways.:woot:

Wont that require a speed sensor?

Why are we limiting to these two motors? Honestly I would recommend looking into a 4bt or a 4BD Isuzu motor. Just an FYI neither of those motors are going to jive with 4.56s. You'll be looking at wanting probably 3.73s with a diesel so factor that into your weight out. The only diesel I know that likes to cruise at a higher RPM is the 5cyl mercedes Im putting in my trooper and that motor is not enough engine for a burban.

Compare a 4bt to a small block. 6bt is more like a big block. Do you ever think you would need a big block? If not than why even consider a 5.9. I think a lot of people overlook the other diesel options out there and think its 6bt or bust for a fullsize but thats so not the case. The 4bt could get you mid 20s fuel mileage in a burban with everything working correctly and a 4BD is even better.

In AZ you cant get your car registered with the 4BT and they have a lot of vibration.

I am sticking with these two for options because its what I know and who I have connections with.

Your 91 should have one in the t case output, right?

All diesels vibrate friend. Rubber or hydraulic mounts are your friend.

On what grounds can you not register a 4bt power vehicle in AZ on? They're approved highway motors.

I have some friends that are in the diesel industry and they have played with 4BTs and have just found them to have more vibration then a 6BT.

As for registering its has something to the effect of its not a DOT engine but yet they are in bread trucks so yeah i dunno. Besides I can find 6BT all day long.

out of the 3 that I know of where attempts of 4BT registration failed 2 of them swapped in 6BTs and were cleared.

4BDs were in plenty of isuzus

4 cylinder inlines will ALWAYS vibrate far more than a I-6. Based on the architecture of firing 4 cyl in the same degrees of crankshaft rotation as 6 cyl. Well known fact, your friends unfortunately didn't just discover it.

That's why OEMs install counterbalance shafts under the crankshaft in most larger I-4s. Then still its not perfect.

To answer your speed sensor question -- Of course you need a VSS! All EFI systems use one and do suffer some negative consequences when they are not utilized. TPI in particular uses it for idle control, coasting de-fuelling, converter lockup etc.

And yes, your 91 has the correct speed sensor in the transfer case for the Vortec MPFI setup. GM still uses the exact same sensor in the newest of rigs.

I guess you'd have to dig up rules and regulations. Does AZ do different rules by different counties like some states?

Well if you live in the metro Phoenix area you have smog testing, which I am just on the edge of. Other then that all the counties are the same.
