diesels?

hmmm i really wana go diesel when it comes time to swap motors, and i love the idea of a cummins but they just seem so damn expensive in comparison to a 6.2. maybe a 6.5 to compromise. i just home my 5.13s and 42s wont be too low for a diesel.

Not sure I agree with that... numbers are numbers... If you actually compare the off idle torque of a hot sb or mild bb I'd bet most people would be suprised to find out that (depending on the setup) the tq numbers will be pretty damn close. you still have to spin a diesel up to get it to pull... they don't grunt right off idle. I say that having towed with deisels.

its your rig man... just get what you want. Judging from your sig it's gonna be a diesel.(boooo)

i think you're referring to me, so i'll respond and say this: i do have a diesel - i'm not looking to get anything. yes, i like them.

that being said, what i'm saying about them being built for two different purposes was not about numbers. i'll be the first one to say that in most cases its cheaper and easier to build more power with a gas engine. these 6.2s were built as gm's response to the fuel crisis of the time - people needed work trucks with decent fuel economy. so they gave us the 6.2 which answered that problem, and gave resonable enough power to get the job done, just maybe not so quickly. (ref: the diesel page 6.2 book) that's what i meant.

so i say again, comparing them as to which one is better is not the proper comparison. it's all about the purpose of the rig. good power can be made with the 6.2, along with good fuel economy. i'll be running mine on biodiesel, so a benefit for me is that my truck will not be anywhere near as bad for the environment as even most cars, not to mention it will only cost me about $15-$20 to fill my tank and then, if on a freeway, go 600 miles before refueling. :) I like that ratio.

K5's don't weigh 7k... I was talking brand new duramax, cummins, powerstroke with 5 grand + put into em territory. Like I said you'd have to drop some serious $$$ to make it something to brag about...diesel and speed are not commonly used in the same sentence. A stroked sb or a 454 could push 600 hp n/a for around 6k... add a blower and your talking 900+ hp for 9k on a brand new motor.

my guess is the guy with the blown 540.:p:

Let me slow down.....

Most 4x4 diesel pickups weigh about 7K, if not more with aftermarket accessories like toolboxes, fuel tanks, and big bumpers.

K5's weigh 5K-6K usually. You need to do some more research on late model diesel pickups on the strip.
I don't want argue... 12's is impressive but a bb or sb can run those times for less money.
Not in a 7K truck, good luck getting a SBC to push that much weight that fast and good luck having any reliability out of that BBC that can keep up.

I know k5's weigh 5-6k... and yes diesel pickups weigh about 7k...I said new cummins duramax powerstroke because of the motors.

Good luck paying 8k (if your lucky) for a new duramax and hot rodding it to run 12's. The rig I was talking about that runs 12's also has twin turbos... not cheap or reliable.

Honestly though man... a SMALLBLOCK 450+ cube motor can be built for 6 or 7k NEW... 8 with a blower. four wheeler built one and ran it on a dyno... Hows 750 hp and almost 800 ft lbs of tq sound? Sure it had a blower but do you think a diesel running massive boost and drinking about a gallon down the quarter mile will be anymore reliable? I don't.

give me 15k and I could have a 1000 hp 500+ cube ls2 with a 10.2 deck height or a blown 542 pushin 1200hp. Money is power... sure a diesel could make more... but so could the gas... just depends on how fat your wallet is.

If your spending the same amount on a diesel and a gas...the gas will win... that is just my opinion.

But I'll end this right now and save us both the time... anybody have a couple trucks they want to race?:D
