I installed a finned aluminum diff cover on my 2000 Silverado (1/2 ton 4wd) over the weekend. The cover is quite a bit deeper than factory.

The factory calls for 2.5 qts. I filled my rear diff until I had oil coming out of the fill plug but it took almost 6 qts!

Does this sound right?

For an increased capacity cover....sure.

You used the fill hole on the diff, or is there one in teh new cover?

If you used the factory fill hole, i dont' see how you could possibly overfill it.

Should be good to go!

I used the factory fill hole on the front of the diff close to the pinion gear.

That just seemed like a lot to me for a 10 bolt...

If it's overfull will it hurt anything?

If you filled it through the factory fill hole, you can't possibly overfill it, unless you are working on it facing up a huge hill.

If thats what it took, you are fine. :thumb:

on the 2000 and up it says to not fill to where it runs out the hole, says like 1" below (cant remember exactly) and thats thru the factory fill hole on the diff body not the cover.

On our K5's yes till it flows out the hole, on the NBS its different

Hmmm... I can't see how having more will hurt it? If it's overfull it will puke out the vent tube right? I have to drive it about 300 miles this weekend so I need to get this right.

Hm, then i stand corrected.

Checked the autozone manual, and it doesn't specify, just says fill.

Where'd you read 1" below?

Honestly I think its in the owners manual

I had a 2000 Z71 and put a polished aluminum ORD diff cover on mine and it didnt take any where near 6 qts. I think the added capacity was only 1.5 qts IIRC.

If we knew what brand he had Im sure it states the added capacity

Think about it...factory is 2.5qts and this added 3.5qts to that for a total of 6qts....his diff must look like a 9 month pregnant womans belly LOL

Yah, seemed a little high, just didnt' see how you could possibly overfill, unless it wasnt' supposed to be filled to the filler hole level.

Guess the direction is to check the owners manual then. I don't have access to one to verify myself.

Yeah, as long as the vent is clear, it should not make any difference. Worst case, it pukes a little.
Otherwise the more the better. Will heat up less, and have more room for wear particles.

But it sure must have a bulge. If you get a chance, snap a pic. Hope it does not interfere with your trailer hitch........:D

Diff Cover is made by Trans Dapt. It doesn't specify how much added capacity it holds.

I called Trans Dapt and they said as long as it's not past the fill hole I would be good.

If the truck is pregnant I hope it gives birth to a 2011 2500 Crew Cab 4wd Z71 with a Duramax!! :waytogo:

I'll try to snap a pic of it with my phone in a few min.

Ok here are a couple of pics of the cover. I used regulat Valvoline Quarts from Autozone. Non synthetic because the truck has an Eaton Posi in it.

The cover is quite a bit deeper than the original...

When I filled the diff the truck was in the driveway which is at a "very slight" angle and the diff is pointing up slightly as the truck is lifted 6"'s.

The driveway angle is extremly minimal.

as long as you are up to the regular fill hole you will be fine.run it as is.unless your inner seals are bad and its lettin the oil out through the tubes, you filled it the factory way and will be all good.

You must check and fill the diff while the truck is on FLAT GROUND. A slight angle will definately changes things quite a bit. :deal:

I did use the GM Limited Slip addative as recommended by Eaton.

Last night I drove the truck over to my buddy's shop and had it sitting on a level surface. We pulled the fill plug and let the excess run out.

I'd say less than a quarter of a quart came out. Everyone seems to think it will be fine.

I guess the 300 miles this weekend will be the judge. I'll keep my fingers crossed.

Thanks for all the input as always.
