What's everyones opinion on switching from dino oil to synthetic?,Right now shes sittin at 141k with no visible leaks, is it safe to do the switch/smart?
Here's a thread from last year, regarding Mobil one attacking seals, and why PAO / ester blend synthetics may do so.
http://coloradok5.com/forums/showthread.php?t=193478&highlight=PAO
conventional wisdom says that synthetic oils have super duper detergent powers that can dislodge gunk that previously kept the oil from getting past the seals.. it's the oil by itself that's the problem.
Now, the synthetics are using less PAO / ester base and more mineral base so you may not see a problem in that regard.
one thing that may be an issue for you at that mileage is the quality of ring seal. cylinder wear is a real issue, so if you are getting any blowby when the cylider fires, you could shorten the oils life by cooking out the additive package sooner than occurs normally...if that's the case, why not ruin a cheap oil?
As always, I say if you are using a cheap dino oil, throw it away after two thousand miles, and if you want to go synthetic, at least invest in oil analysis to see if the stuff is holding up.
if you have an interest, PM me to learn about an oil that outperforms synthetic, doesn't attack seals, and actually helps with the blowby issue..
