okay well i went to check my oil and the dipstick was broken... i immediately drained the oil and bought a new oil filter.. so now i need a replacement and my neighbor has a 350 in his corvette we're working on and it doesn't fit, its too long. then i called a dealer and told them all my specs.. i get it today and its too long..

then i remember the PO telling me it had a 75 camaro motor in it.. wel the oil filter fit but the dipstick is going to need to be trimmed and marked..

so can anyone give me some specific lengths of the dipstick?

total length (from tip of dipstick to where it sits flush on the dipstick tube)
add 1 quart (how far frmo the tip to the line)
full (tip to the line)

if you guys could help me out ill be driving today!!

You'll probably be better (at least easier) off getting the suffix code from the block (behind the alternator on the horizontal flat surface where the head meets the block) and buying a GM one based on that.

Put X number of quarts of oil in and mark the stick with a file, cut off the really excess of the stick and call it done.

I'm with NV. put in the called for amount with new filter run it a min let sit on level surface and mark it with a file. Then you are sure.

What size motor you running? Ive got a 305cid and it only calls for 4.5 , I normallly only put 4 in, drive it around and then check and add if need be. 6 quarts is alot unless you have a diesel, bigger motor, or bigger oil pan.

That sounds like 5 Qts. to me. (including the filter)

Is the dipstick on the drivers side? If so there is only one length dipstick made.

I have no idea where you get that idea. The reason I even began chimming in on this topic is bacuse I had the same problem and everyone gave me the run around about there only being one size of dip stick and after draining about 2 qts of oil out of what indicated full, I did just what I suggested earlier about the filling and marking.

if anyone says there is one sized dipstick then they're nuts..

yeah its on the driver's side

Well, i guess i'm nuts then. I'm telling you if it's a driverside dipstick there is only one size. When you get into passenger side dipsticks then there are several different ones. :ignore:

I actually read somewhere that there was a difference in length between 4Bolt mains and 2 bolt mains dipsticks. It then you have those single variations for several years then you'd have to conceed there is at least two different dipsticks. then you throw in the vehicle variations the motor originated from and your really screwed with options.

For example my motor (per numbers on the block) is a 79 4 bolt Camaro, go to Napa and try to explain that to "the parts god" and your response will be "there is only one dipstick for that truck".

I have one from LMC, one from Napa and one that's in it. All three started out the same length and after two qts show full. now I have trimmed and marked the one I liked the best for 5 Qts.

You need to remember that the oil pan is what changes the amount of oil that is required to read "FULL" on the stick. There are many different depths of oil pans but they all use the same dipstick if it's a driverside dip.

So the real problem then is the dipstick tube and not the pan nor the stick?

The stick and tube are the same. You do realize that the dipstick doesn't go to the bottom of the pan right? Lets say you have a 5 qt. pan and only put 2 qts. of oil in the engine, it won't read on the stick. You need 3 qts. before it will read anything. Now if you had a 6 qt. pan you would need to put 4 qts. in before it would read anything. I hope you understand what i'm saying. Basically, GM designed the dipstick to read correctly when "FULL" regardless of how many qt oil pan the engine has. From full you are able to read how low the oil is up to the point that you run out of dipstick because the stick doesn't go to the bottom of the pan.

I hear what your saying the from top of the tube to the "full" point or point at which the pump needs to suck oil should be the same. What isn't being conveyed I guess is that there is somehow a different tube or markings on the stick bacause the fact is the stick on mine would show full after two quarts and we both know that cannot be. (with a 5 Qt pan.)

Has anyone ever cut the tube shorter on yours? That would be the only way that could be possible.
