disc swap, calipers leaking alot

Yeah I THINK the '78 Chevette line is 10mm and the calipers and banjo bolts you have are 7/16", so you should just replace the hoses and be fine.

I ran into this when I did my rear disc swap. Seems stupid, but...
First, I brought the old lines in to match the bases (mounting surface of the lines). I wanted to make sure they were the exact size and the mating surfaces were the same.

Then, there are a bunch of different sizes of sealing washers. I had an issue with the first washers I tried when I pieced the parts together. I ended up buying a box of different sizes to match the entire sealing area and a tight fit around the banjo bolt as well.

The banjo bolts were the right thread size and pitch, but were too long.

My rear calipers are from an 84 Mustang SVO. Frankenstein sounding setup, but it is an older brake system from Stainless Steel.

If that were true, the bolt would not go through the line. 10mm is significantly smaller than 7/16. He can either just measure everything (pretty simple) or look at it to tell that it's all the same size. He can't fit the big bolt into the small hole, so no problem there. If it was a small bolt in a big hole, it would be pretty sloppy, and wouldn't appear to be the right fit at all. I doubt he's mixing sizes, cause it's pretty obvious when things don't jive.

He has told me that the banjo bolt is loose in the fitting which leads me to believe that he has lines for a 7/16" banjo bolt but has calipers and banjo bolts that are 10mm (smaller banjo bolt by .0438" than the hose fitting).

I see... I just thought that the trucks switched over to metric in 79 and that the cars might have been a little earlier.

I just solved this problem when I did the disc swap on my 14 bolt. My problem was that I went to checker auto parts and decided to buy the new calipers not the remanned. The new calipers were poor castings. There should be some ridges around the hole for the caliper bolt. My "new" casting had a gouge in these ridges from machining possibly. So I removed the caliper and returned it. We went through 4 "new" calipers before we found one without this defect. I used all new washers and it sealed up perfectly. This might not be your problem, but I would check the surface where the copper washer should seat.

I measured the the the end of the line and it is 7/16. The bango bolt is 10mm:( I asked for 78 calipers so I assumed they were 7/16 as well. Gonna use 4x4 high link and order up som SS 10mm lines. LOl I got some slightly used 7/16 lines for sale :D

GM started using the 10 bolt in 1977 but by 1979 every GM front axle in 1/2 and 3/4 ton were 10 bolts exclusively.
