Distributor problem?

Here's a pic of my mod... You can see how I looped the two pins where the black and green wires went.

Well, I had partial success. I switched the wires back to how they should be and now I'm getting 12V at the distributor when the key is in both the start and run positions. Truck still won't start though.

I tried to find TDC for number 1 and time it again, but my mom didn't feel any air coming out of the spark plug hole even though I turned the engine over at least 4 times. I tried going off the harmonic balancer, but wasn't sure which one of the three timing marks to go off of. I got as close as I could, which should be enough to start it, I would think. I know I'm not 180 off, because the distributor hasn't moved that far since it still ran, just enough to play with the base timing. Any ideas or should I just keep trying the timing?

Well... 1st off, good for you on resolving the one issue.

For now, if you're confident that you're close on the timing, go back to basics. Are you getting gas? 12V at the distributor doesn't guarantee that you're getting spark. Verify that too.

It only takes 3 things to make it run... gas, air and spark. :wink1:

The annoying thing is, I am fairly sure I'm getting all three, but I'll go through and double check everything just to make sure.

You should probably not assume you aren't 180 degrees off on the distributer, especially since you say you can't confirm the timing mark on the balancer. I can't remember how many times I've said that and ended up checking it just in case and realizing I was wrong.

I've also discovered whenever I start saying, "it can't be that"...it usually is that.

Well, this makes me a double I-should-have-thought-of-that, kick my self in the face idiot. Damn thing was out of gas.:doah: Put a gallon and a half in and it started up. It didn't stay running, but that may have been in part to a partially discharged battery and a disconnected spark plug wire (ok, triple idiot). Feel free to laugh at my expense.:crazy:
Thanks for the help, especially Jon.:bow:

:doah::haha::rotfl:

That IS funny...but it happens.

Edit: Look at it this way, you still ended up learning some new stuff, right? That's always a good thing as far as I'm concerned... :D
