Distributor seating help

I think I'm off one tooth on my distributor and can't get it to seat fully working in a 84 chevy blazer 350 thanks for any advice
 
get her on tdc and look in the hole you will see the oil pump down there line it up 11 and 5 then stab it it will fire, adjust from there
 
If it isn't seating down all the way is usually cause the oil pump isn't lined up correctly. Usually takes a few tries for me. The timing part is easy....lol. I've heard of guys dropping it in not seated and cranking the engine (not starting) and letting it drop down on its own. I've never tried it personally...

Am old distributor with the gear removed can be used to line up the oil pump to the correct position also.
 
From the way it's worded, it seems you think being a tooth off matters in regards to seating the distributor. It doesn't. It's the alignment with the oil pump shaft that keeps it from seating.

My process has always been to just keep dropping the distributor down the last little bit (or fairly lightly pushing the distributor down quickly the last bit of travel) and it will eventually move the pump shaft so it aligns with the distributor.
 
The first response is the answer thanks everyone and next question do I need to rotate the engine so the compression is top dead center before I set the distributor to fix the timing
 
Yes you do need to rotate to confirm the piston is at tdc compression. You could be 180° out if you don't.
 
I figured that would be the answer I need to find some one to turn the engine while I feel for the compression now unless anyone know a way to do it with out the help of anyone else
 
If by yourself take off the drivers side valve cover and rotate clockwise from front of engine, and watch the valves opening and closing. The intake should be closed for about 90* of crankshaft rotation and the piston coming up to TDC. If the exhaust is opening, you need to rotate another crank revolution to insure both valves are fully seated when coming up to TDC.
Assuming your pointer and balancer are correct, set timing to about 12* BTDC and carefully line up the distributor rotor to where the number one plug wire will be on the cap. Give it a squirt of fuel and it should fire right up.
have a fire extinguisher handy, or a heavy blanket to suffocate any fire!
 
found this trick online so if I cant do this I will remove the valve cover
 
i can do it. take a big ratchet and take out number one spark plug stick your finger over the hole turn the motor over till you feel compression then look at timing marks see where it is
