DIY bed liner?

herculiner update

talk about digging up bones I know....

but since these were done a long time ago...how about some current pics of your herculiner? tops in particular.

I am close to rolling my top only with herc (going to spray the interior with higher quality thick stuff) but I want to hit the top with something now that its primered. I actually have NOTHING shiny on my truck, so flat black is perfect...but "flat" black can mean many things.

updates? I would like to see how these old herc jobs are holding up.

Someone did a body resto on a K5 and Herc'd his top. I think his screen name is DK5. He's a bit more current than this thread, I haven't seen any of these names online in the couple years I've been hanging around.

yeah, i was afraid of that. i just figured some pics of some 5-6 year old herculiner would put the haters to rest....or prove their point!

I know that stuff is not perfect for the interior with high wear...but the top, should be fine and keep the texas mesquite branches from tearing it up

it'll chalk like a mofo at some point.. might be worth a shot to throw the UV guard in there... the herc is cheap enough...

straight herc from the can on a hardtop will begin to oxidize (chalk) in a couple yrs usually, not just get flat...

damnit! I just want something thats:

not shiny
not smooth
can take some abuse (mesquite trees)
and be easy!

spray on or roll on? does the 1 gallon kit come with everything needed?

and if I have the top primered already..would i just scuff it up again, and hit it with that stuff? does that stuff need UV protectant?

I sprayed mine on. To my knowledge it doest come in a "kit". I bought a gallon from an Auto Paint house in Tucson, went home and sprayed it on. Great sh!t....if I was to turn my current Blazer into a wheeler I would definitely do it all over again. I had the Desert Camo color, from a distance it just looked tan, the closer you would get you would start seeing the flakes of the darker colors and the rough texture.

I had mesquite trees rub across the entire side, I just had to wash the tree "blood" off when I got home, wouldn't even put a blemish on it.

It looked great after the AZ sun was on it for a few years, I wouldn't think it would need any UV protectant...Ryoken may know that answer

I used Durabak inside and out on my Suburban. I used black inside and gray on the outside. It's been about 2 years and it has held up nicely. The outside has faded a bit, but I like it better that way. I'm new here and too poor to pay for registration right now, can I post pics?

if you go answer some questions or BS in a few other threads, yes. You need 5 or 10 or 15 post before you can post pics (like photobucket etc) Sorry, can't remember the post amount.

Problem with Herc is it's just paint with **** in it. After a while the paint starts to wear/thin and you end up with the ****/sand stuck to the truck and not a lot of paint. I had a Tracker with it on the exterior and after two Michigan winters I had to spraypaint the thing so that the green underneath wasn't showing. After the next winter I had to do the same thing. I prepped the hell out of it, put on 3 coats and the UV liner, and still ended up with this trouble.

question about prep... How do you get the sticky crap from the old carpet and stuff off the interior?

possum

I have been using my MAP torch to heat it up, and then a scraper to scrape it off, but it is still taking FOREVER!

So are you saying, i would have the same results with just a few cans of flat black spray paint?

I want scratch resistance first and formost, and looks are second.

It's better than spray paint but several steps below an actual professionally done spray liner. Even a DIY spray liner like Al's Liner. Much thinner and nowhere near as tough.

I liked it because it was a DD beater vehicle and hid the rust and ugly spots fine for under $200 and a weekend. I disliked it for it's lack of durability.
When it came time to line the interior of The Blazer I paid to have it Rhino Lined.

i HAVE to do something...its primered, ready to go, and just sitting in my driveway.

final say. if I prep VERY well (my buddy is a paint n body guy) and roll hon herculiner. Will it hold up JUST FOR THE EXTERIOR OF THE TOP.

I wouldnt do the interior with if because its rough, and may not take the dirtbike and gear in the back. I just need something to put on the top that will hold up against tree branches.

Its either rolling on herculiner, spraying with rattlecan paint, or ???

But it needs to be done asap.
