ya you do....you wanna no what i learned today??? That i have no vin on my truck /forums/images/graemlins/screwy.gif

does that mean it was taken off??? or do they fall off??? /forums/images/graemlins/screwy.gif im just a little worried about gettin it checked out and havin no vin number at all /forums/images/graemlins/doah.gif

They do rust away occasionally, but its always etched somwhere else on the vehicle--the rivets are special, they are not ordinary "pop"rivets, they have a stop sign shape on the head, not round, and cops know enough to check for any "homemade"rivets made to look like the correct ones--so many people grind them off from under the dash, leaving the heads in the tag intact, and use some epoxy under the tag to "glue" it back in place, and make it look original.Geesh--the crap we have to deal with just to drive an old rusted junk! /forums/images/graemlins/1zhelp.gif /forums/images/graemlins/thinking.gif /forums/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif--You'd think the DMV would want as many vehicles as they can handle on the road, more$$$$for them--instead they make it illeagll, and make you junk a good truck because you cant get a title-- /forums/images/graemlins/screwy.gif /forums/images/graemlins/screwy.gif

so what do i do if i cant find the vin in my truck??? like the one on the dash, is that legal??? can i get a new one??? /forums/images/graemlins/dunno.gif

You cannot register or legally drive a truck with no VIN. You're pretty much out of luck until you can find a title and vin plate.

Not much of a help, but here goes.

In *this* state, if you buy a truck body from the wrecking yard, the VIN is removed by them. Probably to make sure that at no time in the future is the VIN "recycled" to rebuild a wrecked vehicle and sold as new...guessing the state or feds keep track of the "destroyed" VIN's.

When you go to initially register it, you have to get the vehicle inspected by the State Patrol. They assign a new VIN, and stick it in the door jamb. If you have a bill of sale for the cab from a private owner, the state patrol will remove the stock VIN.

I just read in the magazine Corvette Fever about getting replacement VIN tags. It IS possible, and legal. They didn't go into the specifics, just said it was "hard and costly" as I recall.

Don't know how you are supposed to get a VIN if you don't even know what it originally was! It *sounds* like your truck right now, legally owned and registered, is the one missing the VIN? If that is correct, the VIN has to be on your registration paperwork.

Problem with all of this is that state law and requirements are so varied that your state is the only one that can tell you with certainty regarding these issues.

So basically unless i can find another body with a title and vin....im screwed /forums/images/graemlins/yikes.gif WOW that WOW im speechless this sucks /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif /forums/images/graemlins/doah.gif........Stupidity does hurt /forums/images/graemlins/angryfire.gif

I guess it just depends. I'm not aware of any place on the body that the VIN is stamped, but if it is, then it stands to reason that could be used as the ID...they knew my frame wasn't stolen from the partial VIN for instance.

I still would talk to the DMV or whoever controls that stuff in your state. Without a VIN, I'm not sure you could ever prove it wasn't stolen enough to claim it as your own. But, there could be some legal ways around that too.

For instance, I didn't need the title, I just needed the receipt that showed the VIN was removed "legally". That's the problem with different rules in each state, it could be totally different than yours. Whoever does this for your state you can talk to, has no doubt answered the same question 1000 times, so as was mentioned way back when, record the person you talked with, and the time and date, and run with it, if it's answer you wanted to hear. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

1981 and newer Vin is on driver's side dash board, you should also have a Federal Safety Certification label on Drivers door where it latches.

Swapping Vin's is not a good thing if you are caught. Felony in most states. Vehicle is typically confiscated and towed at your expense, Don't forget storage fees. It is up to you to prove what vehicle it is and that it belongs to you. Usually everything on the vehicle stays with it. If identity of the vehicle cannot be proven then it may be ordered destroyed by the court.

Talk to DMV or a Certified Vin Inspector and find out what to do. Most Law enforcement agencies have them. Best bet might be State Police. They can tell you how to obtain a legal title. It may involve bonding for title on a vin # if you cannot prove that you are the legal owner of the vehicle or part of a vehicle with a different Vin #.
