Do check me out. Lights good! Now no start :(

I got a burb!

Why? Well it was given to me, it runs good and the rust isn't nearly as bad as it looks.

I just drove it 400 miles from Caldwell to Afton.

Something is up with the glow plugs so it takes a shot if ether to start it. Like a 1/4 second shot. I will be addressing this first.

I wanted to see how it ran at the speed limit 80 mph. Figured I would run it up there and just see how it felt

Well it felt great so I stayed at 80 while on the interstate.

It's a 6.2 but it maintains 80 mph without much issue.

Kind of blew my mind to be honest.

It got 18.6 mpg on the way home. Remember that's 300 miles at 80 mph and I just flat out floored it on the hills.

The last 100 through mountain roads.

Once again I went the speed limit which is mostly 65 and just floored it on hills.

I was merciless to this thing. It was crazy it got over 18 mpg.

Pics to come it's an 84

Welcome to the "6.2 trucks get nice mileage" club. :thumb: My '83 isn't fast off the line, but it really, really wants to cruise at quite a bit faster than the 55/65 that we usually run around here. Maintaining 80MPH is a walk in the park, it's work to get the truck to stay down at normal road speed. This is all below 1200' elevation, but I'm not surprised that you're seeing similar results up there (though I'm betting you have 3.73 gears instead of my 3.08s)

Your rig is pretty similar to my '84 1/2-ton Sierra Classic Suburban (which hails from your region of the country, too). Truck siblings. :thumb: :haha:

Yep I'm gonna do something with this truck I have never done. Make it nice.

High on the list are headliner fixed and figuring out how to make the AC work.

I would really like a 40 gallon tank too but that's a much much later deal.

The cruise control needs fixed one window switch and the windshield wipers need fixed they work on high and low but not on intermittent. The washer doesn't work either

Aside from the fuel tank, the rest of that is exactly what I needed to fix on my rig (before the transmission blew). Now my list is longer than yours. :haha:

That one and Scotts (@muddysub ) are pretty much my 2 shining examples I hope to someday emulate.

I tell ya what. I really like this thing. Love having 4 doors and not having to jump into it.

Also I stopped by a place here in town and he reminded me he had an old ATS turbo and manifold for a 6.2 lol.

Much future plans lol just fixing stuff for now

My first upgrade!

Replaced the latch pins on the front doors. Local place only had 2 so I did the front doors.

Of course the bolt plate fell immediately even though I tried to use tape and magnets to prevent that.

So just for future reference the proper tool to use to retrieve those is a 10 year old girl. Took the side trim off she reached right in a grabbed em!

Anyway

Ah...the beauty of having small hands handy... :waytogo:

IMGP4318.JPG

1984 diesel 1/2-ton Suburban, Sierra Classic trim, with rear A/C and blue carpet. From Idaho.

The stripes are different, but I think we've found Suburban siblings. Even the wheels & (lack of) hubcaps match.

Do you have barn doors? I like them a lot more than the tailgates...

Well shuffling the kids around today I'm really liking back doors lol.

Yep I think this beasty is gonna stick around

Back doors, eh? Yeah, those are nice. Really nice. They are the reason that our K5 has never seen the light of day. It's just not nearly as handy. Enough projects are wrapping up right now that I'm thinking about taking on another automotive project. And the 'burb is more enticing than the K5. It's just a lot more fun and a lot more useful. You just might be helping me decide... :haha:

Thing about the burb vs my Jimmy. The Jimmys intent was always to be a dual purpose daily driver/ capable off roader.

It's ( in my mind) much better suited to that role.

The burb is much more to the daily driver side and it will stay that way.

Bingo.

Did the Jimmy ever get pieced back together?

Speaking of barn doors--I have seen a 80's K5 around here that someone grafted a pair of Burb barn doors onto it,and it actually looks nice..almost factory...had to be quite an undertaking, cutting them down to fit,and making the rear floor from the Burb fit--(I assume thats how they did it ?)...
GM should have had a barn door K5 option..

Nope I had a bad spell with my head. It's pretty close though. Having the burb though means I can push that off till I can actually take time and do it better. I.E. after my shop is done. I need to have the shop weather tight by September really. With just me and not having enough money to hire it done that's gonna be rough.

Plus I have my in laws truck to fix and another utility rack to do.

My own stuff always gets pushed back

Just don't let anyone else borrow your stuff. Or you spend way too much time fixing it when you get it back.
ask me how I know
