Do crate motors need to run a cam breakin?

I just read that Rotella synthetic 5w-40 is 1200ppm and compcams even mentions recomending it in one of Fordums links. Thats the oil I run in everything else. And planned on running in this when it was broke in.

They say NOT to run synthetics during break in. But MOST of the dedicated break in oils are SYNTHETIC:rolleyes: :haha: Just something I noticed:D

Good point. Back when I first started using synthetics, we never used them during break in, because it took forever for the rings to seat.
But, the regular oil had enough zinc and what have you that it was fine.

When I put the new engine in my truck, I started out with regular oil, changing it every 500 miles up to 1500, then went to about 5K and then switched to synthetic.
Don't really know what cam it has, I think roller.

I guess in this case, I would go synthetic, since a little oil burning until the rings eventually seat is better than a flat cam.........

I was told reasoning for not running synthetic during break in is just that, the anti-wear is so much that the rings never seat, and the bearings run a possibility of "glazing."

I've desided on mine that I'm gonna do the addative to my existing oil for the first 3-4 oil changes of break in. then switch to rotella synthetic for the rest of its life

ZDDP means "Zinc Dialkyl Dithiosphosphate"
Its not a brand name, but an additive package that is so important for the longevity of flat tappet cams....a few companies make this additive package in a 12 oz. bottle to add at new cam break in, and every oil change.
some would say after a proper break in, the additive isn't needed, but I run it every oil change to be a little over cautious.

I had it wrong, this is the one I was thinking of

Listen to engine builders on this one. When I broke in my 355 I used conventional oil with the break in additive. I switched to VR1 at 1000miles. The only problem with VR1 is that it only comes in stupid high viscosity. Since my main bearings are setup on the loose side I need the extra viscosity. On a GM crate motor its bearings would be a lot tighter and I think they even recommend a 10w30.

They do make VR1 in 10-40. Its available but sometimes you need to get the store to order it. I just buy it a case at a time.

Royal purple baby:D

They have conventional break in oil which I used, then got the 15w40 synthetic for the remainder of the 408s life. I wonder if the Inside of the motor is purple:whistle:
