Do you do it?

I keep all my receipts in file folder but don't keep a running total.

That's how I do it too.
Generally I have a basic rough estimate of the total though. Just because I remember numbers well.

I really don’t care about how much the rig has cost me in hard parts. It is what it is. What I’d really like to know is how much it has cost to build the truck. A simple guess puts it at 4-5k in just consumables?

Maybe I’m low, maybe I’m high, but I think I’m right in there.

definitely don't keep a running cost and don't see the point unless you're going to try and flip it.

This part made my giggle.... :rotfl:

I was so adorable back in 2001 when all of this first started....

Just buy a 1st Gen, then put aside a little money to fix it up.

"Hey, why not put a few prices down just for fun so that I know how much it will cost, and how long it's going to take."

Can't put a price tag on freedom.

But it does cost money;

Fluidampr Harmonic balancer.
Water Pump.
Axles swaped. From 10b's to; 12 bolt rear dana 44 front.
Yukon rear axle shafts.
Lockers.
Ball joints.
Axle u joints.
Warn premium hubs.
33" BFG's.
Injector pump rebuild.
Lift pump.
Front and rear receiver.
Multi mount winch and wiring.
12volt starter and conversion.
Tuffy console.
90's steering wheel swap.
Rebuild NP208.
All belts and hoses replaced.
Rear window crank.
Add Paradox cooling upgrade.
Propane block heater.
ORD 3" lift with Shackle flip.
Sway bar disconnects.
Greasable eye bolts.
All new bushings.
New shocks.
New Tom Woods driveshafts.
T rex grille.
New Brass radiator.
Rebuilt both Alternators.
New glow plug card and glow plug bypass button.
Windshield wiper motor.
Add coolant temp gauge.
Add oil pres. Gauge.
Add underhood led work light.
Add aux back up led flood light.
4 wheel diamond pattern chains.

These are on top of the Suburban seats and spin on fuel filter the previous owner installed.

Saved labor by doing all by myself.
But the materials cost me way more than the truck itself.

I am probably north of 10 grand into it including the $4,600 purchase price of the M1009.

I could maybe get $7,000 if I sold it...
And it would be an extensive effort to find a buyer at that price.

Most people want cosmetic perfection.

I strive for mechanical reliability above All else.

No regrets.

Having a J code 6.2 with just over 100k miles onnit that starts reliably at minus 37 degrees f and standard military rifle rack behind the drivers seat.. priceless.

I may not need to invade a hostile country.
But I could.

This made me laugh, it needed to be quoted.

On the flip side, I need to put lots of money into my rig. I would hate to know what kinda money I have spent on tools!
If nothing else, I am being real.
We budget for our freedom in America, and winning the objective freedom of those we feel are not free.
Apparently.
Be careful Canada.. you are damn close.

No way.. the current build I sold a lot of parts for and that money is gone so it gives me a rough idea of how much just this round costs to this point. I have 2 other vehicles sucking money too.. Ugh. Sometimes I chuckle.. Drugs would be a cheaper hobby
