Do you think the 2000 cc...*edit...brake controller wiring issue*

ok see here is the problem...I'm afraid since 2000 was a transitional year things are going to be different...in 2000 the 1/2 tons had the "new" (old now) front clip where as the 3/4 and 1 ton's (like mine) still had the old front clip...

This is a pic off that site...

Thats what they say '99-present have inside this box...

ba_plugin_1.jpg

which is EXACTLY what I found under the dash of my boss' '06 2500hd but under the dash of my 2000 (which is supposed to look the same as those pics) it doesn't...I don't have that black box...just this...

This is the wiring harness that I have and its supposedly for '99+ so I just don't understand how my 2000 is COMPLETELY different under the dash compared to what its supposed to be...is there any info. that might be helpful in the vin? I believe it was Chas (gmc4cw) that was able to run them and check stuff out...

The P3 is the cat's a ss . Friend has one and it is just sweet. One thing to be sure is it won't work up to it's full potential unless your trailer brake's are well adjusted . I would Tow in OD if it was me. I towed my K10 With 1 Ton's and 44" Bogger's with my 01 Sierra 1500. The truck towed fine when in od, When I got into more hill's I would take it out but as the owner's manual states Od is just fine. Mine has a 4L60E , and a cooler. Only thing is the next trailer I get will Be gooseneck. The Sierra is soon to be going in favor of a newer Diesel.

your truck is essentially a 98 or older. the only thing shared between a 2000 1/2 and a 2000 1 ton is the year. they are completely different trucks. unfortunately they do not make a plug in harness for your truck. you will need to run wires. its not that hard. here are the instructions.

Ok, I was afraid of that...the Black, Red and White make sense but what about that blue wire? It just runs to the trailer connector...is there a wire under the dash that I can splice into that already runs back there or do I need to solder on a wire and run it the length of the truck?

no need to solder it, just run butt splices. the blue wire is the brake signal from the controller to the plug on the hitch.

you need to take apart the wiring going into the plug and see what you have. you should have as a minimum, ground, stop/right turn, stop /left turn, marker lights.

with a brake controller you will also have brake signal and a 12v power to charge the breakaway battery.

7 prongs have a extra spot for backup lights.

this website should also help.

hmmm well ok then...I got my hi-lift mounted with a lock on the front of my tool box in my bed tonight but tomorrow's project will be getting the brake controller wired up and ready to go...

Thanks for the help Chas!

Oh btw we have a 6 wire (I looked tonight) already on it so it should be pretty easy with that diagram...

Your 2000 should have a orange wire and and blue wire run already from the firewall under the hood to the rear of the truck. I used the blue wire to hook up to the controller and the the orange to hook up to the battery for the trailer charging circuit. Then just hook the ends at the rear of the truck up to the trailer connector. Both my 2000 3500 and '99 Sub had these wires. (they both had the '98 and down bodies)

Ok thanks for the heads up...I just got home from work so I'm going to grab some dinner and then get it put in...I'm getting excited about this trip!

I get to pick the trailer up on Friday and then we take off Friday night!

Ok I'm mid install on this beast and I ran into a problem...

I got the unit powered up and mounted where it'll live with a good connection for the 12v as well as a good ground and it powers on like its supposed to....

The last two wires are the red one for the "cold" prong on the box that supposedly sits behind the brake pedal so when you push the brakes it puts the truck's brake lights on...well I guess I'm supposed to attach this red wire to the "cold" prong so the controller knows when you're pushing the brakes...
I can't find it!

Ok second problem...under the dash there isn't an orange wire so I checked it out in the back of the truck and its a 6 prong connector and it is only wired with Brown, White, Yellow and Green

Anyways...I'm going to try to figure out where the heck this brake sensor thingy is to connect to but its so congested under there its damn near impossible to get a good look...

Ok this is a once in a blue moon situation but I finally had to call uncle...

In the morning I'm going to call the trailer place and see what type of brakes the trailer is wired up for (its a long story but I've heard of some that just apply the brakes when it senses the brake lights coming on)...but if in fact I do need a regular controller (I'm 99.9% sure I will) then I'm going to swing by U-Haul or an r.v. shop and let them finish it up...

I finally found that stupid "brake sensor" box but its buried under a crap load of stuff which includes this dumb steering column sleeve type thing thats WELDED in place so I can't even get to stuff...I managed to reach my big hand up in there and found the wires exiting the box but I don't know which one to splice into and even if I did I can't get up in there to do it...

I didn't even run the blue signal wire to the back or the 12v wire to charge the break away box b/c I figured there wasn't any point...

Its so god dang frustrating that GM puts together these Frankenstein trucks during "transitional years"...what bull sh!t is that? I've done some research via our good buddy google and I'm not alone...aparently there is a "transitional year" for quite a few vehicles...either way I'm sort of PO'd right now so I'm calling it a night....Grrrr....

you're lucky I'm a nice guy. here is where you should be able to grab a brake signal. use a test light to find out.

as for the signal from the controller to the trailer, just run a wire. stick it through a grommet in the firewall and run it down the frame. couldn't be easier.

ok what about the black 12V wire? Is it literally just a wire from the batt's + terminal run down there or do I even need it (iono if the rental trailer has a break away box)...

Oh and thats exactly where I was pulling power from last night (the far right prong above where it says DRK GRN)... Is that ok? Or does it need to go directly to the battery?

yes the black 12V is just a constant power. the power for the controller can come from anywhere. I took the pic of a truck we had on the lot that had a Tekonsha voyager in it. they used the DRK GRN for the power source.

I would run the 12V power wire now since you have to run a wire to the back for the brake signal. that way you only have to crawl under the truck once and open up the connector once. Then if you get your own trailer all you ever have to do is hook it up.

My 95 came with no towing package, but the wiring from the cab to the rear of the truck was there, stuffed up next to the fuse box, wrapped in electrical tape from the factory. I would have had to do some wiring, but that's it.

Your 2000 is not a frankenstein, you just need to consider it a first gen IFS truck for all parts and service related items.
