well, my starter hasn't been working properly recently. the quickness of the start is much slower, and sometimes it takes a second before it will wind the engine over. starter or solenoid?

Im interested also. my starter recently started the same $h!t. I think its cause of the heat from my headers though. It gets worse when the motors hot.

need to wire in a remote solenoid. What you are experiencing is probably a loss of voltage through all the 20 yr old wires and connections. There is a couple different ways to wire it up, but that is where I would start.

Here's a link to a kit that does what Jason is talking about:

Remote solenoid kit

Probably not quite as cheap as you can do it yourself, but you won't have to run around looking for the right parts. :)

Can't quite tell from your description. The solenoid pushes the gear to engage the start motor, so if the motor doesn't spin right off, something's wrong.

Now, if it takes a few cranks to catch, that's not the starter's fault ;)

Could be the solenoid starting to wear out. Could be that the cables are old/corroded/whatever and not getting as much juice down there, so the motor spinning drops the voltage to the solenoid more. Check connections, and maybe peel back the insulation on the ends and look for corrosion.

And as with all things electrical, make sure your grounds are good. Having quad-ought positive cable TO the starter won't do squat if the ground is thirty feet of 18GA speaker wire to the battery.

ok I understand the remote solenoid and how to wire it but how do you wire the starter after the solenoid is gone off it? there has to be a wire going to the starter right?

sorry if its a dumb question but after searching the only descriptions I can find are how to wire the remote solenoid but nothing about what to do to the starter.

There is still a solenoid on the starter to move the starter gear. You just jumper the two wires on the solenoid. You still have to have the starter gear move down there, even in a remote solenoid setup.

ok, that cleared a lot up. thanks.:wink1: and sorry colby, I kinda highjacked your thread.:doah:

If it cranks right away but seems like it doesn't spin as fast or "drags" it is the starter.

Just a thought, but hows your battery?
batteries are good.

i suspect that 4x4high is right... which is a major bummer. i don't have $300 for a new one. :( good thing i've got a manual tranny!

Should've bought a gas rig, starters are only $30.00. :D

true, but i think i make up for it in my 20mpg! :D

turns out i found a starter for $225... that's a lot better than 300 like i thought. i'll keep checking around tho.

so i guess i pay for my starter what you pay over me in fuel! :haha: there are only 2 things i love more than my 6.2: my wife and my jesus! :D it's one sexy engine... for sure. i'm not kidding. i wouldn't trade that sucker for most anything!

Another thing to consider. Look for an alternator or starter rebuild shop. Alot of times they can rebuild the starter for a fraction of the cost of buying a new one. A buddy of mine does it and usually it is a third or less than buying a new starter.

interestng! one reason i'm interested in going with a new one, however, is because if i run a starter from a 6.5 diesel i get the gear reduction starter and much better future starting. :)

So can the solenoid and the starter can actually be replaced separately? It's been several years since I've touched a 6.2L. I remember that the starter is stinking huge, but I thought the solenoid was integrated into it, just like on the gas engines.

they can be replaced separately. i've done it many times on this starter...
