Dodge dually Dana 80 swap?

In looking for a d60 front axle I ran into this add. Just down the street from me. Since finding one is so hard around here Im looking at Dodge too. Found this and immediately started researching the swap. Just wanted the 60 but then I started "thinking":doah:. What about that d80. I'm not finding much info on this. Being a dually, how much would be involved in sticking this under my '77 or '78?
Oh here's what I'm looking at:
I have a good dana 60 front axle 4x4 out of a 97 dodge diesel with 190K miles on it, it has 3.55 gears and is complete for $650 obo, I also have a good dana 80 rear dually axle out of a 97 dodge 1 ton cab and chassis with 3.55 gears and is complete with 190K miles on it as well for $750 obo, if you buy both, $1300

The dodge dually dana 80 is 72 inches wide and has super deep drums for dual wheels. Cool if you are staying dually. Really wide unless you use h1 wheels.

It has a 1410 pinion yoke and 4" tubes. I'm pretty sure brake lines thread in and parking brake cables are ran down the driver frame rail. Disc brakes are an easy swap with aftermarket parts.

Well I'm kind of an old school cat, not into the H1 wheels at all. So I guess I'll just stick with the 60. To bad though, that D80 sounds like a nice rear end.
Just have to keep my eye out for another 14ff

If you get that 3.55 60 front will have to change gears to match a 14 bolt. 3.55 not an option on 14 bolt

Yes I have a 14ff and a D44 with 4.11s. I just figure the D 60s are getting so hard to find that I'm going to have to do a gear rework anyways. Plus that seems to me to be a pretty good price?

I'm not sure what you are referring too...or where you are looking...there are plenty of GM d60's out there for sale...sure maybe not many in your town, but there are plenty out there. And the work/money you will put into that dodge d60 doesn't seem to be worth it to me.

With the money you are going to put into it (along with the $ you pay to source it), you could probably order a gm d60 for almost the same price (minus your labor to install the parts you needed for the dodge d60) from a company like Boyce Equipment...or pay shipping by purchasing from someone in another state that's selling one on facebook (rockcrawling classifieds page). From all the gm d60's I've seen for sale lately...I'm not buying the "d60's are getting hard to find" thing

I've been looking on Craigslist hoping to find one local. But I guess I should expand my search. I didn't realize this '97 wouldn't have a straight axle up front either. To be honest I haven't checked the local yards.

'94+ Dodges are straight axle but the diff is on the wrong side, no locking hubs, central axle disconnect, coil spring, on and on... It is a very different axle than the typical king pin D60 commonly used in square body Chevy's.

Narrow your search to GM square bodies. Pre '94 old body style Dodge trucks have a D60 that's very similar but there can be some drawbacks associated to them.

Or do what I'm doing....05 f350 axles. Super 60 and sterling 10.25. Cheap, strong and relatively easy to fab into our trucks...LOL since I am just now starting on my swap that's all I can tell you.

Those 1994-2002 Dodge Dana 60's are junk. The have axles that are about the same size as a Dana 44 or corporate 10 bolt as well as unit bearing without locking hubs.A lot of times they have a bend housing. They usually sell for around $200-$300 around here. I had one for sale for $200 for probably 2 or 3 years before it finally sold.

What gears are you wanting? If 4.56 will work, It is usually better to find a set of military CUCV axles. They have a factory installed Detroit locker in the 14 bolt and usually really low miles. They usually just need new seals and new kingpin bushings. If you can't find any local, I have a bunch of them about 275 miles from Austin.

I agree with all of this

Me too. It took a few months but I found a set of military axles for $900 on cl. Bonus was the guy had the rear already converted to discs and it had a Detroit. Front needed rebuilt, stuck a gen4 elocker in it in the process... all good.

1997 Dodge 60 front is 30 spline inner shafts and 33 spline stub shafts.

I just spent about 20 hours and several thousand dollars re-engineering and rebuilding one. I would never swap it in a Chevy.
