Does your Blazer suck in the snow/ice

luckily im not driving it this winter because last winter that thing slid all over the place in the snow. i know my tires arnt ment for ice and snow, but geez. i remember just sliding last year all over the place. I think its because my tires are so wide. 14.5" or so. an it doesnt have alot of weight in one place, but rather spread out.

Do any of you all swap out tires/wheels for the winter dayz? maybe some winter driving pics
 
I don't have any pics on this computer but my BFG Mud Terrains and Goodyear MT/R's both did VERY well.

I'd say the MT/R's were a bit better but I loved the Mud Terrains too.
 
I had cheap generic muds on it last year and it performed well during the worst snows. One storm dumped more than 2' overnight, and the Blazer performed perfectly. Should be even better this year with the new tires having some decent tread depth.
 
mine does well in the snow but the ice is another story. if it is ice with snow on top its not too bad at all. we has some freezing rain early this winter and 4wd hardly helped at all
 
I got stuck in the gas station parking lot yesterday. Even in 4x4 I was totally stuck, wasn't going anywhere...

Boggers are NOT good on ice, at all
 
SNOW and ICE are two completely different conditions and you can't always predict which you will get ice. Mud Terrains work great in snow but SUCK on ice.

Siping gets M/Ts from the "life-threatening" category into the "decent" category. Here are the only solutions I know of for ice traction:
-Winter Tires (like Blizzak, Graspic, etc.) - may not come in sizes for lifted trucks
-Chains - illegal except in mountain passes
-Studs - illegal except in mountain passes
-Carbide a.k.a. green diamond compound - available only in remanufactured tires
 
My blazer goes great in the snow and ice. I run Pro Comp MT tires. They are siped and work good in both snow and ice.
I am locked front and rear so I have run in 2 high most of the time on the street when it is snowey.. Only time i use 4x4 is in deep snow or for short times on the street if I need a little extra traction. It snows here from november to march. i spend a lot of time outdoors in the winter. So i get a lot of snow driving in, both on and offroad.

I should clarify -- My boggers will go everywhere in deep snow, but on sheer ice they have next to no traction at all. We've had a lot of freezing rain here recently, so roads that are not frequented and many parking lots have an inch of sheer polished ice on them.

My 96 has winter / ice tires on it, I can drive on the ice without any concerns, but deep snow can cause problems.

Yes, I had those tires once. They aren't really siped, they just have a little pattern molded into the lugs. So you get some traction benefit for the first 2/32nds of wear. After that you slide 1/2 a block on ice praying for any form of traction, helplessly approaching the cars stopped at a stoplight. Then you thank God that somehow the cars in adjacent lanes were far enough apart that you managed to slide BETWEEN them without hitting anything and swear that you will not run MTs on icy roads ever again!

Like I said, snow and ice are totally different.

Here in CA, you can use studded tires from Nov thru April.

We have never used them, but my wife's Camry is getting a set this week. Hopefully she will be able to make it up our driveway on most days.

I have been thinking about getting them for my new blazer, as it could use some new tires. My burb has MTR's which have worked great in the snow and decent on ice.
 
off road in the snow my truck is not to bad yet but it sucks on the street. I am locked front and rear and with all the steep hills where i live i have to keep a hub locked so i can actually move. and with one hub locked the truck is all over the road not fun t all
 
Back in the day I drove my blazer for a winter, it did a great job throughout a chicago winter. At the time it had a 4" lift, 35 X12.5 Trxus Mts, stock axles,2.73 gear, gov bomb rear. Those tires are awesome in the snow

Hmmm... strange... this is my third winter on my Pro Comps and their siping is still working. It is still plenty deep in the center groovs. I have no problems on Ice or snow. I gets -20 or below all thru winter here. I drive every day on ice and snow for 2 months.
Maybe you just run too much tire air pressure.
IMHO the Procomps are way better in snow /ice than my old BFG MT.

Siped 38.5x14.5 TSL/SX They were terrible on the packed snow/ice until I siped them. They do good in the deep stuff if I get them down to 2 or 3 PSI. My biggest problem I is I have a poor tire-to-weight ratio. I need 44's to really get good flotation with this heavy-ass rig. I've seen boggers and they do alright in the deep stuff and/or straight & level, but get onto a snowy side hill and kiss your day good-bye.

I'd say sipe them up, you'll love the difference.
 
Usually more aggressive tires dont do well on icy roads.

The best I have seen in the snow and ice are ATs. The big lugs of mud tires dont do a darn thing when its slick.
 
The 35's on my truck do awsome in the snow but on ice it's a different story. Just going to have to hang on.
