1974 Blazer...does your heater/ac fan motor turn on when you turn the ignition key forward to "Accessory" before it cranks?
Mine does and I have wondered if it is supposed to...

Yes it was required back in the day to force air into the cab even when the controls are in the off position.

My understanding is they were concerned with fume buildup in the cab with no fresh air coming in. Yes I realize our vehicles are nowhere near air tight, but that was the belief back then. I have never owned a vehicle, and this includes my 96 Safari, that didn't have the fan on a small amount regardless of the position of the controls.

See I knew it did that but never knew the reason, now I know.
By the way those fumes ARE really bad, that is why before we get in any car, I always open the windows for a few minutes before we get in.
I usually will start it and open the windows, let it warm up then come back and take off.

Speaking of fumes...I get asked all the time if fumes are a problem with the top-off. The answer is no, for me...I don't get fumes convecting back into the truck when driving...but pull into a garage and whoa! it gets thick quick!

No..the lever on the control is all the way down.

Are you referring to the lever that goes up and down? That does not turn it off completely. That only goes from low to higher settings for the fan.
The lever that slides side to side turns it off...it has an OFF setting.

If you don't like it just swap the switch out from a newer model, then when the switch is all the way down it will be off.

ditto.... :waytogo:

Maybe trucks that have A/C have an "off" position on the slider lever--but every truck I have owned without A/C (73-87) has the fan running when the blower speed switch is all the way down (and says "OFF" on some trucks, even though its NOT !--its on "low" speed in the lowest setting...moving the heat/defrost or hot/cold lever wont shut the fan off,as they are not connected to any wires, only the air flow doors in the heater box..

I disliked having cold air blowing on me from the first moment too,so I tracked down the "low" speed wire at the blower housing and snipped it!..my heater motor had a nasty habit of running silently for about 4 minutes, then suddenly start to screech like a spun rod bearing until it warmed up,and I got sick of thinking my motor was about to seize up...I drilled a tiny hole in the rear bushing of the heater blower motor so I could squirt some oil in it every fall to keep it rom squealing too,on the higher speeds..

I don't have AC, but I did, and when I switched controls I put the switch with the off position in my non AC control panel, so now I have a non AC truck with an off position. Works perfect for me.

Haha, I did the same thing for a couple years, drove me nuts to the point that I broke down and bought a new motor at Autozone. It was $12 and I swapped it in while the truck was warming up before a night time snow run. Kinda wondered why I ever let it be a headache at all.

And my '76 is wired the same way, soon as you turn the key to on you hear it. It would annoy me more if the truck was quiet enough for me to hear it, but I can barely hear the motor on HI.

I used to have problems with fumes with the cap off or the rear window down, but that was when it was running rich. Fixed everything and it doesn't get fumey at all now... Even passed emissions yesterday!!! Oh, and I gained 5 mpg, so it's quickly paying for more parts!!!
