I mean perfectly smooth? And I don't mean cam lope or any of that. Can anyone here day there motor idles smooth, no shimmy, no shake here and there. Just dead smooth...

I've yet to have a rig, new or old that does. Even my 04 with will under 100k would shake here and there.

My current rig has a newer crate 350 in excellent shape, arournd 70k. just did cap/rotor/plugs. still has a mild case of the shakes or what would be concidered a miss :dunno: or is it just normal V8 behavior?

i get a shudder every now and then, i had it on my old motor and my 98 gmc sierra with a vortec 5.7 as well. i kinda just got used to it but i still notice it as well. no idea why, and it doesn't seem to be affecting anything important so i let it slide.

I always called that the Chevy shake, every single Chevy motor I have had had an odd shake to it, slight miss here and there, never fired smoothly. Even this '05 5.3 does it, never runs perfectly smooth, although it is much better than my Burbs.

My blazer idles smooth.
But Chevy motors really do shake.

My tundra's 4.7L only shudders when the a/c is on.
But thats a product of the idle jumping to keep up.
That's normal.

If the 7.3L in my F250 ever shuddered, you couldn't even tell... :haha:

I have a 454 that idles so smooth sometimes when I'm at a stop light I can't even tell its running.

Crazy thing is, I been putting old used race oil in it since I had it.

I've driven a lot of chevy trucks from old carbed 350's to 88-98 350/454's to the more current 5.3's and 6.0L vortecs and they all have their little hits and misses as they sit there and idle. They ran fine but did have noticeable misses at idle.

The Cummins in my Dodge on the other hand although loud as heck is one of the smoothest and most consistent sounding engines I've ever had/driven. Have to love a straight 6 configuration in that regard.

good topic, it's odd how they shake, just a little from time to time, but my Mom's Infiniti I30 (3.0 Maxima) idles sooo smooth there's been times when you turn the key when it's already on. Never a shudder or shake.

Actually reminds me of a time, I was leaning on a friends little Toyota something or other, we were just chatting one evening, I happened to get a gust of wind and felt heat, I was literally leaning on the hood,,,, I stopped mid-sentence and asked him, "is this thing running?"

he said yes, I was blown away at how quiet and smooth it was.

Another time was chatting with a guy at work, he had his newer Chevy truck sitting there idling, I didn't notice right away, but for some reason, I heard something alittle "different" I asked him, is this thing a Diesel? (it was quiet) Yuppers, Duramax, basically first I had really heard them run and idle, made him open the hood to get a look at it, was nice. that's when I started falling for those motors :D

I LOL'ed.... :D

I was hoping someone would get it:waytogo:. Sometimes it's hard to convey certain lines in writing.

On a more serious note, my 4.2L I6 in my Trailblazer, I would say that does idle perfectly smooth. You barely even know it's running when it's warm. When its really cold out and you start it cold can hear a little piston slap or something like that, but it is usually very smooth. The big cooling fan is kind of loud though sometimes, louder than the engine.

The tbi 350 in my vandura actually runs surprisingly smooth. My 408 is lopy from the cam so u cant really tell. But the 5.3 i had in my 01 half ton had that shake to it. Did plugs hoping that was it, annoying but. i got over it. No check engine light either so. I couldnt really figure out what it coulda been

Mines dead smooth. I leave it running the entire day when out wheeling. Other than the exhaust noise, you would not know it was running.

My 91 is silky smooth, with 230k miles on it. I have no idea if it's the original engine, but it sure needs valve stem seals so it just might be...

I put in new injectors, EGR, MAP, and a variety of other items along with a tune up....
