I'll try to add stuff as I remember it... Probably forgetting stuff.

It actually started with a 1979 k10 I traded a gun for. I planned on building a wheeling rig out of it. It ran and drove and was a good start...but would have taken a long time to build on my budget. I was also pretty new to wrenching on trucks. It was sold to me claiming it was a crate 350, it had a valve cover that said '350'. I found it was a 305 after looking at the numbers on the block later :doah:Wasn't a bad engine though, ran fine. The truck didn't stay for long though.

A friend from our 4x4 club was having some rough times and had to sell his truck, the CUCV. I traded him a Jeep Cherokee for it and some cash. It had the lift and tires on it, that was about it. Saved me a lot of time and money vs. building the '79. Everything else was kind of 'band-aid' rigged together (He won't admit it though.) Steering was terrible, had terrible death wobble, half the accessories didn't work, leaked every kind of fluid, wheel bearings were shot, front drive shaft was bent, and probably some other stuff I could give him crap for and forgot about.

Started with getting the little things fixed. Had a fuel leak that kept letting it bleed off, and a nasty coolant leak. Got the heater and windshield wipers working. Wheel bearings replaced, got the brakes turned etc.

First upgrade was crossover. I used the kit from Sky Manufacturing. I ended up giving the '79 to sledheadak for helping with the welding. I had no other use for it, he ended up plowing with it before the tranny blew up :doah:

Cut out the front crossmember, welded in 3/8 plate and a random think piece of steel pipe found in the shop. Bought a brand new 2wd steering box, put it all together and WOW! What a difference...steers awesome. Also got a new front drive shaft made around that time.

To be continued...

The steering was excellent, but it still had the most terrible death wobble. Bad enough it actually threw stuff out of the bed one time :eek1: I got pulled over for it once too, enough was enough after that.

Started with replacing the kingpin springs and bushings. That was fun. This is where I do a lot of my work: The driveway.

It still freaking death wobbled after that too, I was pissed. I gave up on fixing that for awhile and decided I was sick of it being so hard to start when it was cold. Threw in a fresh set of batteries, 6.5 gear reduction starter, new 60G glow plugs, manual switch, and new starter and glowplug relays. I wasn't about to **** around with it. It starts up really nice now. No pics of the under dash starter relay, sorry.

Here is a little bit of tech... this is how you wire a manual switch on a CUCV controller card. Light blue is switch to ground... wire it a button, you're done. Pretty hard, I know.

Plug relay modification, I think a lot of people also do this for the starter.

To be continued...

Decided to try and tackle the death wobble again... thought maybe the completely destroyed front shackle bushings might have something to do with it. Yellowk20 helped me out with this upgrade. Used a diy4x kit. I also replaced a seized up front axle shaft around that time... I still haven't been able to get it apart. Need a big press.

Yeah my grinding sucked...oh well. IT WAS A FUNNY ANGLE OK.

I know, the bolt is really long.

That didn't fix it either. I ended up having to shim the front kingpin springs, it finally stopped after that. Around the same time I replaced the tranny/t-case mounts. Got a little driveshaft clearance back. Just enough to work.

Picture of the engine bay after all the useless crap was removed. Both batteries are on one side in steel boxes, works great with the battery blanket.

Got bored one day and decided to take care of some rust, tear out the rest of the useless wiring, and clean it up a bit.

And a few random pictures.

(Can barely see my wife over the dash.)

LOL, look at my car...might as well park under it, save space.

Might get done this winter:

6.5 Turbo
56" springs up front
63" in back

Looks like a beast man.

What's the specs on the lift and tires?

Did it have a snorkle on the d-side or something at some point? Noticed the holes and...block or whatever that is.

6" lift springs with zero rate pushed 1" forward up front

Homebrew shackle flip and short block out back

42" TSL's on 15" wheels

the hole is from a Arctic heater package that burned diesel fuel, you dont really see them on 1008's but there pretty common on the 1028's ,1010's and 1031's

Here is kinda a bad picture of part of the assembly on the passenger fender. theres other parts of it that go over to the hole on the drivers fender. Ive never actually seen one that was complete and working though

Oh I also dicked around with the pump. Turned up the fuel about 1/8th of an inch and advanced the timing 'one line' or about 1/8th of an inch. Picked up about 1mpg, runs better, smells better. I average about 12-13mpg.

Yah know, I've seen those and seen pictures of engine bays with those but never knew there was something on the fender. Gotcha.

The winterization kit is a diesel fuel burning system. The passenger side heater ducted heat to the enclosed battery boxes, cabin. The driver side had a heater that circulated and heated coolant with an electric pump, it ducted diesel exhaust to the oil and transmission pan. Mine didn't have the swing fire heater, but it was set up for one. You could turn on these heaters without the truck running for extreme cold weather starting. They operated on 24 volts.

The hole in the fender is for the swing fire heater, it also has a power outlet right next to the hole. The swing fire ran on gasoline too, kind of a pain... don't normally have gas handy.

We still have a few CUCV's in service at my unit.
