is this a common problem? I am going to try and weld it so it wont break off, yes it is that bad on driver side.
I was looking and wondered why drivers door was not closed all the way and found that.
both sides are cracked and need welded. will get pics later

I would just change them.
$10 a piece with new bushing

it is the metal where it bolts on to the door jam, guess i should have specified where it was cracked

So the sheet metal?
I had a blazer like that, it will be weak just welding it, I went from the back and put a plate to reinforce it.

It's the body that cracked, going to weld it so it doesn't break then weld a patch in back if I can get to it

First pic is driver side second is passenger side. Not happy but got to fix it

See how the tops of the strikers are worn badly? That's from a saggy /misadjusted door hitting the striker. Over time, it causes the pillar to crack like that.

That doesn't look so bad. If the sheet metal is welded back together properly with the striker removed and the doors get adjusted correctly, it should hold up fine after that. But if it gets much worse, it's going to need cut out and plated.

remove 1 washer behind the stricker . make patch same thickness and weld it on from the outside . but leave hold big to let you adjust it .

looks like your hinge bushings are going and letting the door drop and ride on the top edge of the stricker wearing it off.

be carful when you remove the stricker bolt . not sure on blazers or suburban . but truck cabs the rear threaded plate just drops out . but can be held up in place with your hand from back of cab behind seat . blazers and suburbans I am not sure if this happens or if its captured .

Also, besides worn hinge bushings, make sure you have the plastic piece that goes over the stricker bolt. A small piece of PEX will work.

i already did the bushings and ill re-align the door after welding it up

I had to fix this on mine, the nut is captive on blazers. *actually found the pics. I made a small plate to replace the stressed section completely. Welded the nut cage to the new piece.

looks like it was from misaligned door ill have to fix that, got it good enough that i can get my brother this weekend to fix really well

Bad body (cab) mounts and rotted floors lead to this happening often too, along with loose door hinge pins --the body flexes around going over bumps and the door is about the only thing keeping everything "square",and the striker bolt gets pulled up and down, eventually the metal cracks..

My first car,a '63 VW Beetle did this, due to the floor pan being rotted around the heater ducts that provide most of the structural strength to the floor pan..I tried brazing up the cracks, the same spot cracked again,so I had a guy cut out the bad metal,he welded in a piece of 1/8" flat stock there with a MIG like the photo's above and it never cracked again..
