Doubler,Black box,Stack or Lomax???

Here we go again!..... :D

After a tremendous amount of research, I went with an Atlas-4? (Basically equivalent to the STaK option)

Uses the same planetary gearset as the Blackbox (2.72:1) and mates it to a 2:1 Atlas case.

Effective ratios are 1:1, 2:1, 2.72:1 and 5.44:1

if that's not deep enough they also offer a different combo with 10.34:1 final reduction.

:usaflag:

I think we'd all go this setup if we had the $$$. But it all depends on what you wheel and what your current setup is. I'm a th400/205/4.56/42s and I need a lot more gearing. But the lowmax kit is looking like step 1 because its prolly the cheapest and easiest. Then save for atlas. Doubler is cool but can be hard to source the tranny/203 for some and theres the added cost of driveshaft mods and new crossmember. By the time you do all that you coulda had an atlas with the $$.

is that a glass house you live in ther ????? i see some stones hahaha i think too much time has passed fron the last time you wheeled -- but a nice floor of parts :D:haha::haha::haha: just teasen ---

What are you talking about...??? I just welded last night!

.....oh, you said "wheeled". Nevermind.

im bout to swap in my doubler with WMS 3.1:1 gearset in the 203 (basically like a lomax in a 205) so ill have 1:1, 1.96:1, 3.1:1 and 6:1 and triple sticks :)

i think if your going to go doubler, definitely get a lomax with it, otherwise you can get similar gearing for about the same total price but with less weight (but then again these are fullsize pigs, who really cares bout weight?:p:)

Guys who are running Lo-Max and WMS gearsets, how much did they cost? How much did your doubler cost?

I think the black box and klune v are underrated as options. The BB is $1600, your choice of input and output splines, and comes with a cable shifter.

a lot...:haha:...here's a breakdown more or less of my whole doubler set up

203 range box...$40
203 adaptor...free
rebuild kit for 203...$89 (saved & rebuilt it myself)
NWF doubler...~$700
LoMax...~$1700
Cable Shifters...~$300
700R4 to 203 spacer...$50
1410 yokes...$89 each
And all the little things...paint, shipping, x-members, time, etc

and since we're showing off...

i was fortunate enough to get my stuff from other people. i got my WMS 203 rangebox with 0 miles on it from Greg72, and then bought a complete NWF doubler from Gotmud77. the NWF doubler was completely built by NWF and the 205 has billet 32spline outputs and triple sticks. i removed the NWF 203, sold it and bolted up the WMS 203. total ive got about $2k into it, but if you bought everything new it would be much more

I really like the Stak if money was not an issue. The gearing seems well spaced out without being crazy. The Atlas 4-speed is nice but it seems like you would really only have 3 different gears that are worthy. One option the 2:1 and 2.72:1 seem really close together, and the other option you have the crazy low 10:1.......how often do you really need that type of gearing?

The biggest factor is where/how you wheel. Here in the midwest/east coast area a lot of places you can actually hurt the trail performance by having too much gearing because you need some wheel speed. One guy in our club just spent a ton of $$ building a Jeep with a NV4500, 10:1 Atlas 4-speed, and 5.13 axles on 37's and now is finding out that he rarely ever needs anything but the 2.72 range in the Atlas.

But I bet the options are nice to have when he needs them. ;)

That's one of my chief reasons for buying the Black Box. I now have 3 low range ratios. Two are general purpose/tooling around/little bit of wheelspeed ratios, and the third is a stupid low I need to crawl ratio.

look i havnt had the yellow truck off road yet but i will tell you with the 465/203 39s and 373s you would be suprised how low it is ...its not as low as my blazer of corse but its pretty close....i dont know if it was loss in the torque convertor, tire size i dunno but its plenty low...just for kicks i drove up the the store the other night in 2wd low and topped out at 40 mph in 4th...i imagine after i put the 456s in it thats all im ever gonna need

What about a lomax and a black box?? Was talkin to the wife about it and she said I might as well get what I want to start with. Will the NWF cable shifters work on the lomax.

What will my overall ratio be with that combo and a 400TH,and 4:88's??

im running something very similar to the black box. im running a 231/241 "doubler". the 241 planetaries is the idea behind the black box (2.72:1). so with my setup i've got 135:1 final gear ratio or 7.4 low-low range (4.03 x 2.72 x 2.72 x 4.56). i do wish i had an option for twin sticks, but i went for the gear reduction instead. i will also mention that my entire doubler setup weights probably 80-100 lbs and cost me about $450 including the second t-case.

roughly 99:1 before the tq converter.

I have a 465/205 with 42's and 4.56 gears, I really need lower gears and that will be my next change.

My plan is a 231/205 doubler using the 32 spline input and 6 gear planetary from a 241 in the 231 (they are directly interchangeable). This is actually really similar to a Black Box/205 setup. The 6 gear NP241 planetary set (2.72:1 ratio) is the exact same that is used in the Klune V, 4 speed Atlas and the NWF black box. That would give me 2:1, 2.72:1 and 5.44:1, plus its lighter and cheaper than a 203/205 doubler.

The downside is finding the used parts, the packaging isn't as clean as the Black Box or Klune V, and you have to modify the 231 to clear the 205 shift rails.

Back on topic, for the money, the Black Box/205 combo is the best choice IMO.
