Drill Press rebuild

How's the wiring coming along?

You should call Painless and ask if they make a complete kit..

I cleaned up all the rust, the orange stuff pretty much wiped off with a soaking of WD40, and I am surprised at how smooth the bearings are after repeated blasts of WD40 and carb cleaner. I think I'll do like 'fumes says and put it together and run it. There's a tapered roller bearing on the business end of the spindle that I just packed with grease. I'm going to get all the old grease out of the bearings, regrease and then run them. I'll buy some new bearings to keep on hand, but I wanna see this thing run, like the rest of you. I need to give it a little more work with steel wool and elbow grease, and then put a cord on it. It's a three phase motor, so I'm going to see if it will start on a static phase convertor on my lathe. I'll post some pics as I go.

Here''s some pics of tonights progress. I cleaned up all the bearongs, and, though it will run a little noisy, it should be good for many miles. Heres a pic of the gear box after cleaning everything then getting a good shot of light oil with graphite, a dab of grease here and there....Compare this photo to the first one I posted.

Here's the bottoms of the two case halves, one rubbed down with steel wool and elbow grease, the other still nasty

Heres the case back together, ready to be installed.

OH BOY! that allmost going to be like firing a new motor off for the first time, cool! wish I could be there. looks great now Matt, doing a great job at getting her cleaned up.

Thanks UYB.

TodayI added a cord and redid all the wiring. I still need a cord connector and three phase power.

Moved to Tool Shed so more CK5ers could follow along. Nice build Matt!

It's running. I hooked it up to my lathe which runs a trhee phase motor off a static phase convertor. It's a little noisy, 'cause of the bearings, but it runs just fine, shifts through all speeds no problem. With it hooked up to my lathe this way, the lathe becomes a rotary phase convertor when I turn it on. The drill press runs awesome when the lathe is on! I am planning on making a rotary phase convertor, but for now my lathe does the trick. I'll post pics later.
