Drive over trailer fenders

I just got a car hauler that is 82" wide and my front tires are 88-89" wide. My original intentions were to space the fenders away from the frame of the trailer so I could drive between them but now I am debating between making these drive over or spacing them away from the frame.

I also thought about putting on some stock wheels and tires when I haul it but I can't see swapping tires at the trail head happening too many times before it gets real old.

Does anyone have any pics of how they made their fenders drive over, spaced apart, removeable?

Thanks

I have seen removable & heavy made drive over types, a search would prolly find you a lot.

My trailor is similiar to yours & I have the thin dinky fenders on mine. I just drive over them. It bends them a little & every so often I have to bend them back. Eventually I will go to a deck over gooseneck, so I really don't worry about it much. After that I will replace them w/ a normal heavier gauge fender.

I just did one side, and used something like 1/4" x 2" angle iron up against the fender and welded to the c channel. Here are some pics I took with my camera phone.

As already mentioned there is quite a bit of discussion about this in the towrigs section.

On mine I just stacked some old wood 4x4's up along each side of the fender, cut the ends to match the contours of the fenders, and bolted them down. It was originally just a quick temporary solution, but has now been that way for years since it works well.

The only problem is that if you ever some carnage...dead vehicle, broken steering, or even just in 2wd, it can be somewhat difficult to get loaded with drive over fenders. I broke the front end once so was in rear drive only (locker and 38's) and could not get the truck off the trailer in the rain. The back tires would just spin and pull the back sideways. Finally had to have somebody pull me off the trailer! Because of this I plan to keep the drive-over part of the fenders for normal use (it's quick and you don't have to mess with moving fenders etc...), but make them so they are removeable with a few bolts.

I was at a ride this weekend where a guy's fenders where old tires that were cut in half. He attached them to the mounts on the front and on the rear and had another bracket between the wheels where the two halves could bolt together and be supported. They were just a bit bigger than the trailer tires to allow clearance, but when he drove on, they just squashed down so he was riding on the tops of the trailer tires. Different, but it worked.

Mine are removable with 2 bolts each. I have not removed the fenders in the year or so I owned the trailer though. My tires still fit between them just barely. I personally like to use my rollers on my truck when I load it on the trailer. It keeps the height down alot and makes it less "top heavy" and seems to tow a little better IMHO. Just my two cents. I need to make a removable rack to hold my tires though. They take up way to much room in the bed and I don't like strapping them to the trailer. To easy to snatch. A good chain w/lock and a rack would nice.
A removable tire rack now there is something else to add to my need to make/wish list.

I hinged mine and made them fold over. Pull the pins, let them down, drive up on trailer over the tires, pull up, insert pin. Love it. Oh made them so that when they're down they double as a step up onto the trailer too. No pics though, sorry.

We widened ours on both sides with 2" angle iron. Then we welded small 1/4" ramps on the back sides of the fenders so the angle wasn't as steep.

Then 1/4" gussets on the inside of the wheel wells for support.

I was looking at a friends trailer and he used 2x2 tube to make a little ramp over each fender. Real simple and he has enough left over to do mine. Hope to have it done tomorrow.

Yeah I bought the trailer and never thought about how wide it was compared to my truck. Don't imply that I am dumb. Your posting is worthless, hijack, post whore, garbage. I don't give a **** about your deck over trailer or your beat up piece of **** truck with gay window tint. Go play in traffic.
