dropping drv shft on 71.....

hey i'm gonna pull the rear drv shaft on my buddy's 71 k5....is it as cut n dry as on my 86' ? just the little bolts on frt of axle and slip yoke out? cool thnx. just wonder if those yrs have fulltime 4wd..just makeing sure i don't need that special tool that i never have (haha) before i get over to his pad. thnx ya'll. lata

The driveshaft is the same at the diff end,4 bolts or two u-bolts connect it to the yoke...but the other end at the transfer case should have 4 bolts that thread into the CV joint yoke into threaded holes,the bolt heads face the transfer case and are a pain to get at..(assumuing it has the original drive train,should have a NP-205 T-case..)..
 
You have to unbolt the u-joints on both ends. The slip yoke will be in the middle of the shaft it's self. Benefits of this design are that if you ever lose a rear u-joint you can just unbolt the whole thing and drive on the front axle with out fluid puking out the tail shaft. Not to mention much more travel in the slip yoke.

There is no CV joint on a rear shaft in a 71.
 
Yes,I assumed he was asking about the FRONT drive shaft...not sure why!:doah:...the rear one just unbolts at both ends ,the transfer case yoke and rear end yoke are both secured by either u-bolts or bolts & straps...
