I can't find anyone who makes a Drum to Disk brake conversion kit for my 1992 1 ton axle. DIY does not make one and they said they didn't know of anyone who did. Does anyone know who might make a conversion kit for this year axle?

I already need to change the spring perch position and Shock mounts. If I can't find someone who makes a converstion kit for this axle, I give up on it.

I guess one other question. Would a 1987 and below 3/4 ton axle fit my 1989 Blazer "without any perch, pad, bolt" problems? I know they make conversion kits for 87 and below.

yes it would, however I am not sure the 92 is much different post up some pictures. They may not say they fit cuz they may not or they don't know not many people try to fit it in a 92 because there are alot of older ones to use.

Here is a pic of the 1992 axle. I have more on another thread discussing spring perch widths. I am not sure how to post a link to that thread or I would just do that.

AFAIK the standard disc conversion brackets will work on that axle it is just the shock mounts and spring perches that are in a different place and need to be moved.

I would suggest removing the hub/drum assembly and the backing plate from one side than take a measurement from the end of the spindle to the back plate mounting flange and this will be the info that Kert would need to know 100% for sure if his brackets (or anyone elses for that matter) will work on that axle.

I have looked at some pictures and threads of people putting disks on but I don't quite get what makes it good or not good.

Why is my current axle okay to put standard brackets on? Don't get me wrong, that is GREAT news. I just want to understand it all better. From looking, I just don't get it. I know it has something to do with how the drum connects to the axle or hub. But figuring out what it means??...I am missing it.

If it is a corprate 14 it will work. I don't remeber when they changed to an American axle.

How can I tell if it is a Corporate? The only info I could get off the case were as follows: CFD - 163 - 26011862.

That axle IS a 14ff corporate axle (1988-up) and not the later AAM axle.

White line, is drawn between the hub and drum. The drum itself is mounted on the back side of the hub. The Wheel studs go through the drum and into the hub to secure the brake drum. This is the way the older axles mount the drum. Provided the flange is in the same place as the older axles, which it should be, a regular conversion will work.

Red line, newer axles have a "Slip on drum." The wheel studs go through the hub and the drum simply slips over them on the outside of the hub. Then the wheel holds the drum in place by pinching it between the wheel and hub. These have the flange in a different location so the standard disc conversion won't work. Most times, the hub on the back side where the rotor for the conversion will sit is not machined true and can cause its own problems.

For the record, I have never seen nor heard of a 1992 old style axle. How far did this carry?

Cybrfire, That is exactly what I needed. I now understand what the difference is. I am visual type. Thanks a ton.

Thank you everyone for the assistance. Between all of your answers I can feel comfortable in the parts I buy for this sucker. I am going to keep it, cut off the perches and weld new ones on, remove the shock anchor and put new ones on, and install disk brakes. I will more than likely change gear ratios and add a locker but I gotta wait for funds. Now it is time to get to work. Thanks again everyone.

Cybrfire, I am not sure what you mean by, "I have never seen nor heard of a 1992 old style axle. How far did this carry?".

How do I link this thread to my build thread so others can use this information? I want the hyperlink to follow as the build thread progresses.

i can answer that question! just go up to the adress bar and copy the link, "http....ck5....yaddayaddayadda"

highlight it completely, right click it, select "copy"
go into your build thread you want to put the link, then place the cursor where you want it to go. then right click and select paste.

Thanks Obijuan. I figured that might work but wasn't sure it would maintain the link over time. I figure there will be many other relevant threads to come and I want to keep all this great information available to others in my one build thread.
