Dual exhaust build, '83 GMC pick-up

Hey Rene' great talk tonight man, missed talking with ya the last few months, but you know what I've been up against....anyhow the 6.2 sounds great through those pipes, I didn't know quite what to expect, but I guess exhaust gas is exhaust gas:dunno:
I like the tone of it, and the clatter when its at idle.
Nice install too:waytogo:
Has your daughter driven it yet?

What is that hairy focker doing smoking in my truck?????? :rotfl: :rotfl:

Sweet Mother of God, does that sound awesome!!!!! I can't believe that tone is coming from an old 6.2 diesel.

And thanks for keeping the old girl in such great shape!!!!

My daughter shot the vid with her digi cam as I lost the upload cable for our camcorder. I asked her if she wanted to go for a drive (she was wearing slippers...) and she headed straight for the driver's side. I just rolled with it, attached the magnetic "L" to back and we went for a 20 minute drive around town.

My daughter did just fine, and after about 10 minutes she said she really likes the way it sounds now. :waytogo:

Great talking to you again Dave. :waytogo:

yup, need a shave and haircut for sure...wouldn't hurt to quit smoking someday either. at least the truck looks good. :haha:

It just got a new starter on Wednesday, but if you listen to it start in the vid you can hear it's still cranking much slower than it should. I guess the old AC Delco batt's are hurtin. Hopefully it can wait a month til I can afford a pair of new batteries.

Gonna have to do some work on the doors soon, both are starting to rust near the mirror mounts and under the body molding. I'll probably get rid of the camper mirrors at the same time. I think the only things that don't work like they did when you had it are the dash clock (dead) and the delay wipers. It'll need a new delay module sometime, the delay works, but it overheats and then the wipers quit altogether until it cools down. Definitely one of the most reliable trucks I've ever owned!

Sounds good man!

Definitely better than the stock pipes/compression bent 2.5" pipe/no name turbo muffler setup I have.

How much is a set of batteries? :dunno:

Prolly $125 each to replace what I have, 1000 CCA AC Delco's. As long as we don't get a cold snap it'll be fine for a month or so...and if it isn't my Blazer is insured and roadworthy so I have a plan B.

Sounds good man!:thumb:

It`s hard and expensive to get a nice exhaust system, I like the way you did it. Nice exit on the tail pipes.

Some pic's of the drivers side, well a good chunk of it anyways.

Some of the welding, I used no compression clamps at all, everything is fully welded.

Overall there is more than enough stuff in the U-fit kit from Flowmaster to do full exhaust...aside from needing some straight lengths. I like the sound of it, it's got a really nice tone but isn't annoying when you're driving it.

Looks nice Rene, and I wish I could hear it ,I bet it sounds sweet!...
Someday I might be able to get off dial up and buy a newer computer, and join the 21st century..for now I'm lucky to have what I got,period..

You might try slow charging your batteries if they sat awhile..I thought the ones in my '82 were junk,I let my truck sit most of the year in warmer weather,as its used mainly to plow and take rubbish to the dump maybe 2-3 times a month 5 miles away, and I rarely use it otherwise, and my batteries went dead a few times--I left the charger on them at the 2 amp setting for a week ,while keeping an eye on the water level, and they fully recovered..I am surprised the big "Continental" batteries someone stuffed in my Suburban are still hanging tough, after letting it sit since I bought it in Nov. '09,I usually have to just about kill them every time I go to start it,and did a few times, but they recovered after a long slow charge...

Batteries are not cheap now,my sister just bought a Wal-Mart Ever Start one with only a 2 year warranty, and it was 80 bucks!--a few tears ago they were more like 39.95!..and their "free istallation" included snapping the hold down bolt in the battery tray, for NO extra charge!...--I go to a salvage yard when I need batteries,I can usually get them from a wreck that are less than a year old for about 20 bucks, and they'll swap it if it turns out to be a dud..better than 100 bucks when your unemployed and broke!..

Looks Good, and sounds good.

A friend had duals with glasspacks on a non turbo 7.3, and your 6.2 sounds WAY better

I'm going to have to get that now. I found a set specifically for my truck for $100 but this seems like it might be the better option. God knows that a "production" kit never fits right. How many ubolts did you have to use or did you weld them all together?

Common, like tRusty would ever use clamps on something? Guy probably welds his shoe laces together every morning.

Yeah, no clamps...just the factory hangers modified to suit my needs. I'd say there were four locations on each side that could have been clamped with U-bolts. The rest were butt welded because they were custom cut portions of the pieces from the kit.

It does seem a little peppier, but the right foot dyno is not the most accurate measure when things get louder. I'll say it sounds much better, and isn't any slower... :waytogo:

One weird thing is I can tell every shift point and lock-up point now. Especially with the window open. TC lock-up, or 2-3 shift...was never this clear before. I'm gonna set the TV cable on the weekend, not sure how long it's been since anyone set it...but the shifts seem to come too early in general. I'd also love to find out how to delete the TC lock-up in second gear feature. Right now it starts in first, shifts to second, two seconds later the TC locks, then it shifts to third (and eventually OD). I'd prefer the TC stayed unlocked through first and second and only locked in third and OD.

Bob, about the batteries...I did have alt issues and the batt's got run down a couple of times. I did trickle charge them over a two day period until they were 100% charged though. Since then it's been driven every single day for 4 months, alt puts out 14.6 V at idle. I think there is a separated plate or something in the one battery and it's pulling the other one down with it. I had 12.50 volts at either battery after it sat all night. Then I disconnected the passenger battery and checked both again. I got 12.2 on the pass batt and 12.74 on the driver's batt. Generally two matched batts in parallel, even when disconnected from each other, should read very close. i'll throw the charger on the passenger battery tonight with it disconnected from the other one. We'll see what happens. It sure can't hurt any!

As far a I know a 700r4 only locks up in 3rd and 4th, at least thats what I remember from the ones Ive had.

Ive never heard of one locking up in 2nd, and I would think that feature would put too much load on the converter clutch leading to earlier failures.

I agree, not supposed to lock up in 2nd....

That truck always shifted funny, but it's got the factory 700r4 and who knows how many miles on it now, including several thousand miles of towing and hauling across the Canadian Rockies.........

Rene: I tried playing with the TV cable to fix the shifts, and always set it back to where I found it because there didn't seem to be a sweet spot anywhere....:dunno:
