Dual transfer case doubler...

I barelly have my foot on the pedal at 1700rpm's. less than I do when I have it in 3rd gear. I have a 406 built for torque with plenty of it, and it is perfectly happy at 1700. The TC stays locked and cool. All the tranny mechanics that I know including the shop that built mine have told me to stay out of OD unless running at a steady speed on flat ground. I Would like 4.56's not 5.13's though, it just isnt economical for highway driving OD tranny or not. There is a reason why GM sold our trucks with factory 2.73 through 3.42 with 3.73 being the "towing package gears" for low rpm cruising in OD for good mileage. /forums/images/graemlins/deal.gif You can't convince me that higher RPM gets better mileage than lower RPM with a torquey motor. I don't want really low gears because I still want to use my OD for what it was attended for.. fuel mileage. I would like 4.56's because that wouldn't be bad for both highway/city/ offroad use but for now I will live with my 4.10's. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Vacuum is what gives you better gas mileage.

It is very possible to run a higher cruise RPM and pull more vacuum, netting better fuel mileage.

I would be willing to bet you'd get better mileage all around with 4.56s over 4.10s, but you may go down slightly if you go lower than that.

If you think you barely have your foot on the pedal now, imagine what it'd be like if you were geared lower.

If you think 2.73 or 3.08 gears and overdrive even with 31s gets even half ass decent mileage you're insane. My truck had 2.73, then 3.08, then 4.10 gears and got better mileage with 4.10s and 35s than it did with 3.08s, no lift, and 31s.

I could see how the high gears would hert fuel mileage in stop and go driving. I had 3.08's with 33's then 3.73's I got better mileage in town with the 3.73's but I got better mileage on the freeway with the 3.08's. I would love to have a set of 4.56's or maybe 4.88's which probably would bring up my mileage in town. When I get a 69' camaro or 67' chevelle built I will use it to drive on the freeway to go see my girlfriend( lives about a 100miles away) instead of the K5 and then maybe I will do 4.88's or maybe 5.13's.

EXACTLY there you go. Wait, save a little cash that you would have spent on the doubler, then go with lower axle gears and you'll be SET. You're finally seeing my point. What you do with your truck is your business, but I really think you'd be MUCH happier if your truck was geared lower than it is now. No sense in having all that torque if you can't put it to ground the best possible way.

I personally think I could benefit from lower gears myself, but I'm pretty happy where I'm at because I don't have overdrive anymore. If I did and I was running my 38s I'd definitely have 5.13s.

Yep, I would go with low gears If I have something else to drive also but for now I don't. It's quit simple. You want me to go low and use the OD like it's 1:1 for a good crawl 1st gear and power, I totally understand, but for now I still want to use my OD for mileage.

One thing that I forget is that lower rpm's on the freeway are nice for sound reasons. I have a REALLY LOUD truck: dual pipes, dual 40 series flowmasters, 5" tips that dump right behind the rearend, and tri-y's. I can't hear anything but motor when between 3000 to 5400 rpm's /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

You've just got too much motor to fill the pipe. Mine doesn't get loud until 5,000. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I can swear their are people on the board who have done 4.56 and 4.88 and then wished they had gone 5.13, but I can't name names at the moment /forums/images/graemlins/thinking.gif

I can see going 5.13 just because you are going to invest about the same amount of money and improve off road driving quite a bit.

I can see your problem using the truck as a DD though. I can't imagine my truck as a DD /forums/images/graemlins/eek.gif Something to be said about a 4 banger for around town driving and 100 mile trips, thats how you keep the gas mileage under control. Then there are no hold ups and limits to your wheeling rig /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

I could never settle for a 4 banger! /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif I could settle for something lighter though, like a cmaro or chevelle with a MEAN small block. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I have true dual exhaust: 2.5 pipe,2 flowmasters, I guess I will have to go to 5" pipe. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Well around here you don't need power. The traffic is so bad you might as well ride a bike /forums/images/graemlins/rotfl.gif

And for me, a v-8 is just too much gas to get from point a to point b. Except for the "cool" factor there isn't any difference. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif
