Duffy Box for Rocks 241 to 205 now...have a few questions.....

Harley, I agree with you that it can't hurt to try. Basically if the 241 fails then I will know and be able to tell everyone my experience. Then throw a 205 behind it and be done with it. This way I only have to buy one case up front instead of two. Another thought was to find a 205 after the install and slowly build it up with bigger yokes and twin sticks.

Once it is ready just put it in and sell the 241:)

That would be the ultimate with a twin sticked 205 in the back.

http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=538659 there it is, hes askin $750 now for it. not what your looking for i know, but i thought id post it up anywho. id assume ud just need to swap in 32spline input into the 231 and ud be good

Unfortunately the 231 does not have the same bolt pattern to mount to my adaptor:doah: I actually thought about doing this also, but I would be stuck with buying 2 cases and an expensive adaptor.

I have been doing a lot of thinking about this also. I don't know about the 241 kit but with a 231 there seems to be some clearence issues with a 205 behind the range box. It sounds like the shift rails don't have the clearence to move. I have seen it said to shift the 205 from the back of the case but don't really know what that involves. I really like the idea of a 231/241 and 205 together.

Ya me too. I read about the shift rail problems. I think getting a drivers drop 241 and using a pass drop 205 might help. I don't really know since I haven't really looked at too many 205's.

Hopefully Duffy calls me back and I can get the 241 adaptor before they sell out!

Jeff,

I have an S-10 231 sitting on the garage floor. I can fill you in on some of the stuff:

1) The bolt pattern to the adapter is different. It uses 5 bolts intead of 6.

2) This one has a 27 spline input. I'm guessing most did. I'm also guessing no such thing as a 32 unless a 208 input gear just happens to work. :dunno:

3) Seems to me you are considering running a 241 for the 2nd case..? I would not do this..... not in a >4000 lb rig I would run a 205.

Marv

Marv,

I just got back from my friends house and looked at his 231. His is out of a Jeep and has the 6 bolt pattern. The diameter also seems to be the same as my 241 where it mates the adaptor....comes out to be about 6 3/4" across.

Since the 231 uses the same parts as the 241 I would assume if I can get one from an XJ I could use it as my range box portion. This gives me more options when looking for a range box.

Ahh.... I didn't think about a Jeep version.... I was just thinking about the S-10 one. Sorry...:p:

I recently pulled a 231 outta my brother's TJ and you're right... it had 6 bolts.

Hope you find something that works! Keep us posted.

Anytime you can make these "chaincases" work out to something good - it's a great thing! Kinda like the guy who first decided to cook up chicken wings and eat them instead of throw them away....

LOL....ya it would be cool if I could get this thing to work out.......need some fundage. Tax return is a coming in a week!

Sent check out today for the 241 32 spline kit. Wish me luck. When it's all said and done I might do a write up or something. Need to sell rifle.....:ugh:

Keep us posted, I have a 241 sitting in my garage, and I'm thinking the same thing.

All right you guys and some friends of mine convinved me to try putting a 205 behind the 241 I have. I am pretty sure I can flip the PD 241 I have and use it as the crawl box and get a PD 205 as the xfer case.

Now a few questions regarding the 205. Duffy says this about running the 205 behind the 241:

I`m just finishing up painting a 231 to 231 set up this weekend , its the same as a 241 to 241 set up just a little smaller is all. I well post pics as soon as
I can handle it.

as for the 241 to 205 (GM or ford) they well need to be shifted from the back side of the case .

How can you shift the 205 from the back? He mentioned something about drilling holes in the back of the case and putting the rails out back? Is this actually feasable?

Also I would like to twin stick the 205.

Is there a writeup to modify the shift rails yourself for Front wheel drive only or is it a better idea to just buy them from JKW?

How hard is it going to be to find a 32 spline short input 205????

Rifle sold, project begins!:D

It is really easy to grind your shift rails and fab a piviot point for your shifter's.
BTW, How much do you plan on spending on this transfer case project?
An atlas2 is only a couple grand.

It was $400 for the doubler kit. I got a Dodge NP241 for free, I bought a 32 spline input shaft to swap into it for $85.

$485 so far. Plus whatever the cost of a 205 is with twin sticks. Hopefully I can score a 205 for cheap at the yard, but it might be harder to find than I think.

All in all I think I will be in it at or around a grand. I will have a 4 speed transfer case!

I think a 4 speed atlas would be well over $3K!

Did it sound like you would still have to shift the 205 from the back with the 241?

In the thread on Pirate 4x4 there is talk about using a 32 spline long input along with a spacer to take care of the shift rail issues. He said he can make a small run of the spacers if at least 6 people commit. The spacer is an addition $200 so if you can get it to work without would be nice. Can't wait to see how this works out.

Problem with using a jeep 231 in this case is that they are 3 pinion planetaries instead of 6 that are in the S series 231s. May or may not be a huge difference in a front case but it is something to be aware of if anyone chooses that route.

Yes the three planetary is a weak link, although NO reported breaks have occured that I am aware of.

The cluster can be interchanged between the 231 and 241. I gave my Jeep friend a 6 pinion and he put it in his 231.
