My 6.2 tossed a rod. When it did it twisted and bent the rod and wrecked the crankshaft. I have a crankshaft and was thinking .With the crankshaft out I know I could remove the piston. But could I reinstall the piston without removing the heads. Was hoping to cut down on some of the labor. Thanks

Isn’t the very bottom of the cylinder somewhat unfinished? If so, you’ll never get the piston through that.

It’s a 6.2 oil burner. You probably have bigger problems than the crank, rod and piston. They like to crack the webbing in the block around the main journals. You might be able to see that with the pan off but with all that carnage I’m betting the block is fubar too.

I’d thoroughly check that out before dumping any money in the block. If that means the engine has to come out to look it over well then so be it. Otherwise you are just pissing away time and money that could have been put to use better when you find out the new crank won’t turn or you can’t stuff the slug up from the bottom.

6.2’s history does not help here.

I thought you had to pull one head to get the crank out anyway. At least that's true for BBC.

Heads have to come off to remove a piston.

If you have a bent and twisted rod and broken crank. You more than likely have a cracked cylinder wall and quite possibly cracks in the main webs.

Best bet is to pull the motor, tear it down and give a good cleaning. Then check it very well for any issues.

You will not get the piston out to replace the rod without pulling the heads. It is much easier to pull all the pistons and connecting rods to get the crank out anyway.

The board is on point.....pull it, disassemble, hot wash the block for a complete inspection.

The head bolts need replacement.... Or time for ARB studs.

Bore, balance, new parts & turbo charge it.

Banks may still have new kits left over

There are probably some USED Banks Turbo kits out there.....

Breathing problems were a major issue on a 6.2

Studs and a Turbo would make major improvements in a rebuild

The crank can be removed without pulling either head. But the main webs block 7 of the 8 pistons from sliding downward. So they must be removed from the top. I have pictures of this in my M1009 thread.

That's the reason I have just one 6.2 piston hanging in my shop. I didn't feel like pulling another set of 6.2 heads to get the others out. :haha:

There is a high chance of metal debris contaminating the motor after this failure. There is also the domino effect. If one goes, usually another issue will come soon afterward.

Taking it all apart, cleaning it up well and putting it back together with fresh gaskets, rings, lifters, rod, etc is not hard to do and would not cost too much, pending on the damage done, is your best option. Or you could take a chance with a 6.2/6.5 Takeout.

If you need any parts to get you rolling again, I may have what you need cheap. :-)

A 6.2 uses Torque to Yield Bolts. They stretch and can NOT be reused ...

They will fail in short order

Upgrade to ARB studs

Too bad you are not closer.
I have a few long blocks I could sell you one cheap and would save you a lot of hassle
