Dumb question...AC compressor belt

So, we've established my AC compressor is toast and pretty much stuck so it's always spinning creating drag. The belt is vintage so no reason to save it...can I just cut it?:confused:

Hits like 3 other pulleys but doesn't seem to be driving any of them.
 
I don't see why not. I cut mine years ago. As long as its not driving any other pulleys.
 
It goes between like 3 or four other pulleys but it seems like they all have other belts going to them as well. I'll check before I cut.
 
I believe it the same as mine. 87 TBI350. It has four belts I think. My ac compressor belt went around the power steering and the crankshaft pulley.
 
Sounds about right. I appreciate serpentine belts a LOT more now that I own this thing.

I swear it picked up a little bit of power despite just free wheeling.
 
That's why I took mine off. Now I'm older and a little wiser. I want my A/C back. 107* here today.
 
AC's dead but working on that. Going to put new belts on then anyway.
 
Bear in mind, with the hydro brakes, the power steering pump is belted *TWICE*, because it needs the extra drive!

Mine squalwed terribly until I added a second belt, same as the alternator belt IIRC, this was shorter than the AC belt but gave two belts to the pump.

Anyway, all the squal sound issued diapered with a second belt, which confirmed in my mind anyway, one belt was not providing enough traction and was slipping on the pump pulley.


I hope Im making sense.

Anyway, if the AC pump is no good, no lose in belting it anyway, without the clutch engaged theres minimal additional load, IMHO anyway.

Yeah, I've kinda figured that out since then. It squeals now on hard turns and sometimes doesn't have quite the oomph it should when trying to turn.

I need new belts anyway so I'm not terribly worried.
 
If the belts still have a bit of life in them now, do like I did... and save the old belts for trail emergencies when you swap in the new ones.
 
Yeah, might just do that.

Oh, btw, thanks to whatever GM engineer designed the setup for tightening the power steering belt. WTF? I hope his significant other gives him the clap.
 
I like TTB. However Ford screwed up a really great concept while making it a production reality.

My technique for tightenng that powersteering belt is a small bottle jack on top of a jackstand. By the time the belt was tight enough, I had lifted the vehicle about two inches. I was genuinely starting to think I might lift the left front tire off the ground!

My technique for tightenng that powersteering belt is a small bottle jack on top of a jackstand. By the time the belt was tight enough, I had lifted the vehicle about two inches. I was genuinely starting to think I might lift the left front tire off the ground!
That sounds about right. The tank on mine has a few dents now.

I need to dig up my pictures when I flexed mine on the rubicon trail, all stock springs, SOA front, shackle flip in the rear, cost was $20 for the front spring pads and a few bucks for welding them on.
My axles where flexed accross like this X
