Dumb valve cover question.

The machined surface on aluminum covers are the tits as well as the gaskets Greg mentioned, my valve covers dont even seap oil:

The casting on the heads where the valve cover sits is often rough and pitted on chevy heads, especially the older carbed engines....some RTV goes a long way towards preventing leaks if thats the case...I prefer using none on the head side of the gaskets so they can be reused, but if they leak,I goop both sides!...

This is maybe most of the problem - the surface on the heads is like 1/4" wide and "as cast". If I was having work done on the heads I would get that machined. It seems like with that, a good gasket and the cast covers you could get away from RTV or gasket maker altogether.

I have a non-scientific theory that for both valve covers and headers, people love to just torque the crap out of the fasteners....and most leaks are a direct result of that.

With headers it's a little tougher because I'm sure people are just trying to fight bolts that back-out over time (due to heat/cool cycling). With a set of Stage-8 locking bolts, some MILD torque and a high-quality compressible gasket I'll betcha header leaks could be cured for good as well.

Thick flanges are good for the "torque the crap outta 'em" folks, but I wonder if it's really necessary if you can lock the header bolts down??

So clearly these valve covers are too shiny for my dirty engine compartment.

So far no leaks, but I haven't even gotten the engine up to temp yet. I suppose I'll have to check out the PCV line to make sure it isn't sucking oil.

maybe not too shiny, but still giving out free advertising for whatever company logo it is stamped on them. It sounds weird, but i personally don't like much of anything with any company's logo or name on parts that can be easily seen. Unless they are willing to pay me for that advertising, or free replacement of those parts, i opt for plain stuff. I even remove any decals off cars with car lot names, or license plate frames. No free advertising.

Just tired of it, this soceity has become too commercialized, with everything.

One of the only new vehicles I ever bought was an '88 C1500 shortbox fleetside pick-up. Had the dealer's name on both sides on the doors and another one on the tailgate. i asked them if they were going to make my monthly payments for me...I figured $400 a month was fair payment for the advertising space on my new truck. They looked confused...until I told them it was either that, or they could remove their advertising from my truck. I waited patiently for an hour or so while their detailing department removed the stickers and buffed the paint.

I thought I was about the only one that had a major hate for that sort of stuff...

Could not agree with you more, thats the first thing I do when myself or family would get a new vehicle. Been a long time since I've bought a new car, but have done it in the past.

Speaking of stickers--anyone know why someone would put a sticker on their window that expresses their personal preference for things like a sports team,etc??..
Yesterday at my friends repair shop,an SUV came in with a shattered rear window, evidently someone following its owner didn't like the "Yankees SUCK" sticker he had on his back glass!......I've heard of guys with "rainbow" stickers on their vehicles being vandalized also ...
Then there are the geniuses who put the pot leaf stickers on their vehicles and wonder HOW the cops knew they were in possession, and cant understand why they get followed and pulled over a lot!!..A-DUHHH!.....might as well have a sticker saying "I Hate The Pigs" too!...

One of my friends bought a brand new Toyota, and the dealer put a fake license plate up front bearing the dealerships name on it--by drilling two sheetrock screws right into the bumber cover!..:doah:...he refused delivery.and told them until they either gave him another car,or a new bumper cover AND a discount for buying a new car with a "degective bumper" ,he'd walk, and buy elsewhere,,it took them 3 weeks to get a new bumper cover, and he got 150 bucks off the price of the car for his "inconvenience"..I bet they ASK customers if they can screw one of those plates on their cars now!

Haha, I Have a massive sticker on my bronco that says "Revin on the redline" lol. Must not be many foriegner haters out their lol. I think they wrote that song... lol

I want to get a sticker on my truck when i get my 408 in. It will say :408 SBC? With a checked box in front of it lol.
