duramax in a K5?? can it be done

Would you be surprised to know that C-15 has as much, if not more (depending on when it was bought) electronic junk on it than the Duramax?

Yeah, hard to imagine that some Japanese company would be #1 in something, USA isn't always the best like it or not.

GM owns 49% of Isuzu, how Japanese of a company are they really?

Assuming another American company doesn't own the rest.

it doesn't have more computer junk
no Mass air meter for starters
I fawkin HATE the C-15, and every "computer controlled" commercial diesel engine I have driven, but really hate the CATs
Some N14-525s are fun to drive, the CATs I have driven are painfully unresponsive. did I say PAINFULLY loud enough?
I just spent most of the day driving that POS so am a bit bitter /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

you are choosing the wrong person to play 'Would you be surprised to know' with /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I guess I dont know what I am talking about, its not like I work with them everyday /forums/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif Too bad you dont like our engines, most fleets and owner operators love them.

against Japanese laws for more then 49% foriegn ownership IIRC

This thread is funnier than sh!t... there are about 4 different conversations going on...

My biggest question is, if you wanna swap a diesel into a K5... why a Duramax? Seems like it would be the hardest, most complicated swap of any of the popular diesels..?

I think I hit a nerve. awsome info guys. I was thinkin of the new Dmax mainly cause its the most powerfull. and the tourqe is insane. but i think the 6.5 turbo may be a better swap. if anyone can tell me what the power rating on the 6.5 is i have heard alot of crap on that. i also happen to have an isuzu npr, and that lil engine is crazy. kicks butt for a four banger.

I LOVE Cat motors! The 3406B in one of our trucks is a torquey motor. I love the cummins in my dodge but the comparable 3116 cat in my Caterpiller Challenger tractor is smoother and sounds meaner.

I cant stand the new diesels in the pickups with that multi injection deal to make it quieter. Thats half the reason I went with a pre '03 cummins dodge, still sounds like a diesel. /forums/images/graemlins/peace.gif I still think my 3116 sounds better.

Yea, mj is just an old fart who cant stand the sound of a good ol' Cat diesel /forums/images/graemlins/rotfl.gif

This is a great thread, although I see a lot of opinion trying to be passed off as fact. I think that putting a Duramax in anything it didn't come in it a waste of time. For less money you can have a better engine. What's so difficult about that decision? A 5.9 Cummins swap makes the most sense.

As to the diesel debate...Everyone remember that the way a medium or heavy duty truck is specced out has more to do with the performance than just what engine it has. I'm partial to CAT engines. There is a reason they have the reputation they do. I also don't see why everyone is so against electronic engines. They are, in my opinion, easier to work on than mechanical engines. They smoke less and start easier than mechanical engines. And for a C15 being a dog...not in my experience. Maybe you should not have bought the 325 horse version. Which brings me back to the way folks spec out their trucks when they buy them.

190 HP/400 torque. Stock numbers. Marine parts, an intercooler and some tuning will get you close to 300 hp reliably.

can you get them to make a motor that has some response to pedal input
you have to drive it like an old man that is afraid to step on it
we also have a 425hp 3406 but I avoid having to drive it
the first trucks I drove were all CAT powered
I prefer to drive the mechanical Cummins engines
they are more driver oriented with pedal response and automotive style pump control.
I can shift much quicker with a Cummins then any CAT I have tried, the electronic ones are horribly slow (by design I am certain).
of course they Cummins has discontinued the engines I like and gone to the X lemon.
I worked for a Co that did fleet field testing on that engine.
when it came time to buy another batch of trucks they ordered all N-14s, Cummins reps did everything they could to make them take some OHC engines

do you drive a truck as well or just wrench?
Have you driven Cummins?

[/ QUOTE ] On yet another topic....that ISX cummins is a complete flop. We have also stayed with the trusty M11 and N14.

the fleet testing went real bad
they try and use cheap pistons on hipowered engines /forums/images/graemlins/shame.gif

I did get excellent service from CAT distributors in Boise Idaho (replaced a turbo and cleaned as much of it out of the intake tract as he could)
and in Stockton CA (verified the valve head had been knocked off by a piece of the turbo that was missed by Boise, stuffed a new injector in to slow the fuel leak)

yeah i think i will have to pull for the 6.5, with all this new info. another funny thing is that my dad and i need a work truck so we were thinkin of shoe hording an isuzu driveline into an s-10. hehe.
it that turns out to be a bad move it may be a 1500.
what you guys think??
Happy motoring /forums/images/graemlins/usaflag.gif /forums/images/graemlins/k5.gif

the 6.5 is also a piece of crap
if you can get one dirt cheap then maybe
but it isn't in the same league as a Cummins swap
