I have decided that we need to revive the use of the CB radio in 4x4s.
The Jeep wave has faded a little over the last few year with so many daily driven Jeeps.
We need a better way to pick out the real enthusiasts and a way to say "HI".
I have always had a CB in the Jeep for trail use, but it is rarely turned on around town. I think in general CB radio use has gone down since most people just text and call each other. Which means the airways are fairly clear for us now.
I was researching radios trying to decide exactly what I want to do in the new Jeep and had a thought. (bear with me)

We can take the forums to the air ways with the CB radio!! Pick a dedicated channel for 4x4s in town....um like 4? Where anyone and everyone can chat, say hi etc. .
Okay.....done with my random thougth for the day. Thanks for listening.

Thoughts?

i use mine when i need to.we would need Ham radio's to talk to each other, even regionaly.:Di like the idea and we might be going that rout with our new administration. i have two hand held radio's for those that don't have one.it's way easier than waiting on the trail for some one or walking back to see what happened.HA, i even have on in my DD.

i think ham radios are a much better option its a pita to get the license i guess but at least you actually have range with a ham

i had a CB in my k5 for a while. all three of my wheelin buddys did to. even had a PA in it. good idea

it's easier than it used to be.my Uncle tried three times and got his. i didn't have the heart to tell him a month later they changed the rules.:laugh:you can pretty much talk anywhere with a han radio.

I've got CB's in both the DD. Both are SSB, but recently (or maybe its just Kansas) I havent been able to get ahold of anyone onthe sideband. The ham license isnt too hard to get these days. You can get a No-Code Tech which is very basic and limited on freq's, but it gets your foot inthe door.

i can't get the PA to work in mine... i had the wrong speaker or something.i want to bitch at people in traffic.:D i know it's against the law,but i don't care.what did you have/ use bro?

They dropped the Morse Code requirement . All you need to do is:

Just go and take the test ( Like my Dad the broadcast engineer , this was stuff he knew already ) :p:

Or , take practice tests online and memorize the answers ( people who want the license but don't wanna study )

Or , study and take the tests ( best way , you learn something :) ) :D

Breaker, Breaker.......

I have a CB in my K5 and my DD. Of course, I drive quite a bit to and from work, so the one in the DD gets used more. I've pretty much always had a CB in my vehicles, except the one car I had (My Dad was an over the road truck driver). None of my buddies have them, though.

now i'm in the yard and hate that more.back to the road baby.

I'd love to do a ham in my truck.. but the money needed to set it up properly puts it way down on the list.

I like the idea. I've had a cb in my cherokee for a while now and will have one in the GMC.

CH4 is a little to close to CH6. If anyone into CB a little more than just trail use, you'll know that CH6 is a channel used by guys who have high power. I've sat up on the hill behind my house and listened to a guy from up in Ohio that was pegging my meter in Va. He was pegging it on CH5 and CH7 and bleeding from CH1 to CH9. I find that up around 30-40 are the most open channels, and with 99.999% of guys running 40CH rigs instead of the older 23CH ones, there's no problem finding them. We usually run CH35 around here on the trails.

From what I read most people tend to tune for the lower channels as well...

If you are running a 9' SS whip w/o the spring, it'll be closer tuned to CH40. Most everyone I know tunes for CH20, so they will be excelent there and good at CH1 and CH40.

That is an awsome idea I have one in my DD never use it because no one is ever on the damn thing. If the word gets out maybe enough people will bring it back. Maybe I will just leave it on channel 3 or 40 since its hooked up to turn on when the truck starts.

Im liking the ham idea, I got my ticket when I was 13, failed the test the first time. Would like to have them both but havnt had the motivation to do it yet.

While HAM is a better set up, I think it is too much to ask for general local conversation of the average 4x4 guy.

Anyone can buy a $10 CB at the flea market and participate, no lisence, no expensive equipment, and MOST already have it.
