Economical way to achieve drivers side drop

use a 2wd tranny and a divorced ford 205. your tranny is now cheaper and easier to find in a crunch, and everything is a bit easier to service and remove a well. When you can afford it, buy a divorced atlas t-case.

the atlas may be a bit more, but it weighs less, is less work and parts and makes future service very easy!

Does the 2wd tranny match up to a Ford 205? If not, I am still in the same boat.

I really dont see a reason for me personally to go with an Atlas. I wont reap the benefits of the mucho dinero it costs. If I was going to spend the money for a big $$$ case, it would have to be 3 speed case. 1:1 2:1 4:1 or something like that. But.. then I could just do a doubler for much less money.

when using the divorced t-case you use a stub shaft/short driveline in between the t-case and tranny.

I dont know what you have into the doubler, but if you were able to sell it for something decent it would not be to bad of a hit for the difference. With your axles and gears you could get away with just a 4 to 1 t-case. The 2 speed atlas is not too pricy. My 3 speed, with the vss, cable shifters, bling knobs and upgraded yokes and flanges was right at 3200 or so shipped i think. The 2 speed should be considerably cheaper.

just tossing one more option out there!

I FULLY APPRECIATE the help and ideas. I really like the divorced t-case idea. That may work out as cheapest. To get the ball rolling.

No way I could run just a 4:1 t-case. I run mud bogs too much to have just that ratio. I wouldnt be able to get the wheel speed I need in the mud. If I have to pick a single ratio, it would be a 2:1 or something close. Thats why the doubler is such a nice idea in my case.

Divorced case... hmmm...

I am a little behind on just what cases come with what splines, etc. But, I did talk to someone at ORD and they said I could not just simply swap the t-cases. So, I would guess that I would have to do the drill and tap thing.

TH350 and TH700R4 use 27 spline outputs (AFAIK, almost seems like I remember a $$ 32 spline upgrade for them).

Clocking ring... ugh, I am so behind on this stuff. I know what a clocking ring is... basically allows you to rotate the case. Right? I remember ready about it and it allows you to ring it up higher, etc. But... this may also allow me to rotate a Ford 205 to make with my current doubler... maybe?

That would be what I was suggesting.

A divorced case could work if you have the available driveline length and can find a divorced Ford 205. To me, it sounds like a divorced 205 has a different casting (for its independant mounts) than a regular married 205. I don't know this one for sure but it sure looks like people make a distinction between the two and it would make sense to me.

Clocking ring. Wow... better make sure there isnt a typo with that one!:haha:

Time for some more research! Back later!

Clocking...

It was so long ago that I am trying to remember... I think my ORD doubler to mate to my 205 is not a circle pattern. So, I dont think I would be abe to mate a circle pattern Ford 205 to it... so, I couldnt clock it.

I may be wrong on this though.

Keep the overall driveline length in mind as you work towards a solution. A divorced case is going to add length, and if the 406's have the long pinion snouts like the 404s you may be looking at a REALLLY short rear driveshaft, and a REALLY long 2-piece front driveshaft.

When I started thinking about the divorced case this came to mind. The 406 does have a very long pinion shout. So, driveshafts will already be a concern as far as length goes. But, the angle should be ok since the yoke on the axle comes up about 4-5 inches. I currently have descent driveshaft angles. So, they will get shorter, but not as much angle. So, I hope it wont be too differant than I am now.
