89 k5 with a 350. EGR valve is bad, I have tried 4 different ones from autozone, advance and napa, all fail the vacuum test. I called GM to order the original one they said it was discontinued. Hoping someone has tried one that works from some where?

Describe how your doing the "vacume test".

Using my mityvac, unplugging the vacuum line going to the egr valve and try to pull a vacuum, if I pump it like a mad man I can get it to 15 but it falls right off.

When driving, you can feel a miss like mainly around cruising speed and the sel comes on. Using a paper clip, shorting the top right 2 pins in the port under the dash then flipping the key on I get 3 flashes of 12 then 3 32's. I used my multimeter on the egr solinoid and can't remember the readings now but they were within spec.
 
There are two styles of valves, and I've never seen it really explained when one was used and the other style wasn't.

I haven't done a ton of research on them, but one is a negative backpressure valve, the other is "normal" so I understand. Could it be that the one you have is a negative backpressure and it tests differently? Just thinking out loud...
 
Not real sure, could be different I suppose... I ordered another one today from Napa that the parts guy says is the right one. Should be in first thing in the morning. Honestly, at this point if the new one from Napa doesn't fix it I will go to the junk yard and just grab a handful and hope I get a good one.
 
I replaced mine with the autozone one, at same time I replaced the egr solenoid zero issues. :dunno:
 
I'd bring the Mightyvac with you and test it right on the parts counter--if it acts the same as the others did as far as not holding vacuum,I would say its supposed too let it bleed off,it would be very rare to get more than two "defective" pats in a row,especially from different sources..
The "negative backpressue" EGR's may well have a vacuum bleed off for it to work properly..

Uploading a video now comparing 2 I have currently. One is ac delco, the other I pulled off an old work truck we had that blew the motor. According to the parts stores they take the same number yet they are different. In fact when I put the one from the work truck in my truck it falls on it's face and runs worse, yet out of all the ones I have had it's the only one to hold a vacuum. My original one wouldn't at all.

I would have to agree. I highly doubt that you are getting one after the other of defective parts. Chances are there is something else going on or user error.
 
First one is the ac delco from advance for 120 bucks, does the same as all the others, also truck feels like it has a miss around 50-55 then the sel comes on and throws code 32. The second is the one off our work truck, a 91 chevy 2500. I just put one in from napa, holds vacuum a bit and the truck seems to drive better but didnt take it out for long enough to really test it. and I would have to agree with the others, I find it HIGHLY doubtful you'd have that many bad parts in a row.. I've done 4 or 5 EGR's, and never had a bad one from the box..

what's usually the ordeal with EGR's is knowing which indexing washer to use. I know some EGR's are supposed to bleed off after 15, 20 seconds..

the only EGR's symptoms I've ever seen are usually off-idle stumbles, etc... not at speed stuff...

I have found the easiest way is to ask to look at the computer screen at the parts store. Usually it has a reference number that can be used with the instructions to determine the indexing washer.
 
Non of the egr valves came with washers, just valve and gasket. I put the one in from Napa and thought it was good till I had time to drive it a bit more. Same issues. I put vacuum plugs on it and drives great. I will revisit this issue later. Need a break from it.
 
Do you even need EGR on your truck? As in do you get a visual emissions inspection?

If not, it can be programmed out via the PROM, that and a blockoff plate, you are done.

Eliminating components from the engine isn't normally my preferred method of doing things, however with EGR's being so finicky (whether or not that is your problem) based on "universal" parts, or just cheap crap, and eventually plugging up with carbon, with no apparent difference in mileage, I could care less about it being gone on my vehicle.

Obviously if it's an item that is going to be inspected you will have to figure it out.

Actually I stopped by Napa the other day and picked up some vacuum plugs, truck runs great. I will cut out a block off plate and have to figure out who to take it to to program it. It's safety inspection only in my state for this year.

I am like you, in that I prefer things be how they should be but at this point screw it.
