Eileens 79 Corvette resurrection. It survived 1450miles on Power Tour

Finish radiator install. Electric fans. PS pump, alternator, AC pump. Plug wires and cap. Some other little stuff. Told Eileen I can't touch it until after the first of the year. She leaves for work on October 22nd. I plan on having it running when she gets back in 14 days.

Shhhh, don't tell her.

So you're half-way through your 14 days. Is it half-way done yet?

Nope. Rolled it into the shop last night. Could not get the lift arms under it. Jacked it up to rotate the arms under the car but the pad adjusters would not go high enough for the arms to clear the headers/side pipes.

An hour of looking around for something to make risers, no luck. After church this morning I ran by the farm supply store. Found some 1-1/4" tractor pins. DSC_0109.JPG
Cut them down and welded a 1-1/2"OD DOM tube over them. Then a 1-3/4"OD DOM over that as a riser.

Ended up with this.

First of many rides on the lift.DSC_0116.JPG
Then I found these items. Could not get under the car when we bought it.

When a guy claims he has spent a bunch of money building an engine, ran it for a while and was so happy with it, he wanted to put it in his Corvette. How does he not seal it up? Spin a filter on it.

Now I wonder about the rest of it.

Yeah there’s nothing I’d be terribly pleased with

Pulled the adapter off to clean it. Behind it was cleanish. Oil looked used but in good condition. No moisture or dirt.

pulled the valve covers. Clean inside. Wanted to set TDC #1. No timing tab on the timing chain cover. Balancer is marked. pulled the loose spark plugs out. Went to turn the engine over with the balancer bolt. Was not tight. BECAUSE IT IS STRIPPED OUT. %$^&*&^%$W#$%^&*(**&^%$$#

Suck dude. Thinking this is why seller was not available at time of purchase...

Kinda reminds me of my Suburban project. I work on it for a little bit and then I hafta walk away so I don't start ordering those Previous Owner Seeking Missles. :doah: :doah:

I'm not sweating it. I just have to rethink the process. Remember, I only paid $3k for it. I assumed it needed an engine and transmission.

Win. Just one so far. Bought a 7/16-20 x 2-1/2" grade 8 bolt. Uses about a 1/2" of thread in the bottom and torqued down. No, it did not bottom out. Checked the depth prior to install.:woot:

Unbolted the balancer pully. Made a plate to bolt on with a 1/2" square drive hole in the center. Engine is not locked up. But it only rotates 1/8 of a turn. :weapon9:

Noooooo. I warned her going into this that it will take some time. She even said she wants to wait on ordering the interior replacement parts until it is drivable.

Realistic. Or no confidence in me.

I am off to buy some seafoam to soak the cylinders.

My 57 pontiac has a 261 6 cyl that sat for 47 years. It was locked up. I soaked it for about a week with everything from penetrating oil to diesel fuel and it did break loose. I was pretty happy, until it only turned over 350 degrees and stopped hard. So I rotated it back the other way, and 350 degrees later it stopped hard again. At this point I said screw it and pulled the head. Some mice had left some seeds on top of one piston which came up against the underside of the head. At least it was nothing major....

I'm missing something...if it's free for 45* and hitting something, why bother soaking the cylinders? If it were seized, you wouldn't be able to turn it that far.

Right?

Surprisingly no. Sometimes it’s just crud in the cylinders, and it will break loose

It is a soft stop. Progressively get stiffer. I'm not going to get up and pull hard. That's when things break. Patience is good on a semi free engine. Seafoam is in and soaking. More tomorrow.

Now have have to start on plans for an 8 office TI in a building.

How long, supposedly, did this thing sit?
