Electrical issue

In '91 (and should apply back to about 1985, whenever all the accessory terminals on the fuse panel face were moved to the top) the floor lamp is powered (20A "T/L CTSY" fuse) AND grounded through the headlight switch. The ground (at the floor bulb socket) is spliced to the ground for the door switches/dome lamps.

The dome lamps are powered from a separate circuit (accessory terminal upper left corner of fuse panel).

So for what is happening with mine, the ground wire from the floor lamp to switches/dome lamps is bad. Makes sense, as that floor lamp has always been flakey in operation. Typical, ground problem.

Thanks for making me dig out my wiring diagram, now it makes sense. :)

My interior lamps work when the driver side door is open, but not the ps or the headlight switch, they all used to work, Not sure if the ps and headlight switch stopped working at the same time or not cause I don't open the passenger side door at night very much. Maybe a broken ground somewhere?

I would feel that was actually two issues. One is the headlight switch itself, the other is the door jamb switch on the passenger side. Each point introduces ground independantly of the others. So if one door opens, that switch provides the ground to turn on the lights, same thing with the headlight switch. The headlight switch could be bad, so it isn't engaging the ground circuit, and the door switch is very likely to be corroded.

Quick way to test, pull the door jamb switch on the passenger side and ground it, that should turn the lights on. You already know the whole ground circuit works since the lights come on from the driver's door.

I haven't been in there in a while, but I believe it should be a white wire feeding out to the domes.

I got under the dash and messed with the headlight switch and they started working, maybe it lost its ground or something. Haven't taken the ps switch apart yet to clean it. Are there supposed to be 2 courtesy light under the dash? the PO had shoved the passenger side light up into the dash with no bulb in it, I pulled it down put a bulb in it and remounted it under the dash, but isn't there supposed to be one on the drivers side too? Maybe the PO cut it off???? I looked everywhere but no light. also is there a light on the ash tray? or one in the transfercase shifter???

No there is only one courtesy light for the front. At least all the K5's I have seen have had a single light there.

Mine did have a light above the ashtray, it is long gone though.

Not sure but I believe there should also be a bulb in the TC shifter assembly, if it has an area to display the selection. Mine just has a knob that displays the shift pattern, but newer ones like yours should have a display that shows 4hi and so on, and those I believe had a single lamp.

That isn't really a light, it's a really primitive "fiber optic". The light source is the guage panel, and the end of it is aimed at an angle above and to the left of the ashtray. It looks like a thick black wire...
