Hey guys need some help. My buddy gave me a 88 k5 that had already been converted to run a carb. Everything was there expect the front clip engine and trans, so i pulled the clip off my 84 (both trucks had the quad lights) and put my motor and trans in it. I havent fired it off yet but it will crank and has power to the wire for the HEI. I noticed that someone has removed the computer, its cranks and has 12.6 volts to the distributor, and everything electrical works but i have no running lights. Turn signals, hazards, brake lights and back up lights all work i just dont have any running lights/ headlights. Goin nuts trying to figure it out....do the lights have to run through the computer? I wouldnt think it would matter. I dont have any power coming to the light switch but all fuses seem ok. Dont know where to look next!!!

thats weird..i did the samething in my 89, the computer is out and everything is fine....sorry i cant help u much more on it.

Did you change the harness for the front lights. The connectors could fit the same, but the wires could be in different places in the connector.

factory harness out of the 88, checked it against the harness in my 84 same number of wires and they are the same colors and have the same amount of grounds. Got it fired off today and managed to get the cam broke in but its not charging either, used an alt. off of an 87. Does the computer have to be in for that? I hate wiring, makes me want to beat my head off the wall and this truck sure as hell has all the gremlins in it. I really dont want to have to swap the harness out of my 84 to put in this thing!

The color code isn't going to change much. It's the placement of the wires in the connector body that could change. I once swapped the engine bay harness in my 74 with a 73 and it did not work. One year difference and the second year of the second gen and the wire placement was different.
I had to change some wires in the connector body to get it to work, and I missed a few. So the end result was a electrical drain though the one wire to the alternator. I didn't figure that one out till I rewired my whole blazer.

i will check the placement next... still dont know why it isnt charging though, tested alt and its fine. There is a fusible link in the hot wire coming off the back i need to check

well i got it fixed, traced all the wires out and didnt find anything wrong. I ran a jumper wire from the back of the alt straight to the positive side of the battery and low and behold it started charging and the lights started working. I guess i will find out here in a couple of days if its going to work that way or put a drain on the battery.
