I'm changing out my t-case adapter (old one sheared off) and as I was taking bolts out, transmission fluid started coming out of a bolt hole. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif I then pulled the drain plug on my t-case(NP205) and TRANSMISSION FLUID POURED OUT! Please tell me that im wrong, but isnt that supposed to be 90weight??? NEED HELP ASAP!!!! /forums/images/graemlins/ears.gif

That's what I am figuring, the BIG ? is, is this a big deal, or can I just drain it and put new seals in and go on about my business.

I'm no expert on a 205 since i've only owned a 203, but I would think that all you need to do is drain it good and replace seal(s).

Some late 205s came with trans fluid in them...

But this particular one is in a '80 truck...ATF in a 205 didn't start til middle to late 80's?

You are correct /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif (at least from the factory), but many "techs" replaced the gear oil with ATF as they figured if that is what the factory changed to, they should too. My 80 was that way when I bought it (filled with ATF), and after a complete rebuild, I switched to 90 weight.

It doesn't mean that the seals weren't leaking (as after this many years they probably are). You should check the drivesleeve for grooves cut into it by the old seals and replace if necessary (under $100), as well as the seals in the adapter, and O-ring seal around the tranny output housing. It might cost a little $, but taking the 205 back out again would suck too. Plus if you get another 23 years out of the seals it is a cheap investment. Either way I would refill with 90 weight.

Thanks for all the replies guys!

I also consulted a local tranny/4x4 guru and he confirmed that it was supposed to have 90weight. Fortunately, he stated NO BIG DEAL, Drain it and replace the seals!

Thanks again! /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

In cold climates it's not uncommon to run ATF because the gear oil is like molasses.

Good point! I saw he was from Texas so I didn't even think to mention that.
I also think using synthetic gear oil in moderately cold climates would work best, unless you live in Siberia or Northern Canadian provinces /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

Actually if you read the original manual it says to use 10w30 motor oil. Gear oil is too thick and trans fluid is to thin.

Actually 10W-30 is recommended for the NP203 as gear oil is too thick to properly lubricate the chain, but for a NP205 gear oil was factory installed in the 70's, then the factory started using ATF. Nowhere have I seen 10W-30 recommended for the 205 in any manual, although 10W-30 would work better than nothing at all.

I've always put ATF in my 205's...
and NEVER had a problem.. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

I scrapped a 80'K5 last year...
I found ATF in the 205... /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
