ENGINE CROSSMEMBER DONE! SEPT 28th woohoo

Re: question about crossover and engine xmember with 52\'s, started new xmember

Well after looking at it for a couple hours I relized a few things I didn't like and that I screwed up on.

-if you noticed I drew my mounting tabs on the side of the tube where it was welded back together (HREW), making the bulk of the stress/force being put on the welds /forums/images/graemlins/yikes.gif /forums/images/graemlins/doah.gif
-second, it was going to look like a big tube under there, so I pulled the sides in a bit and made my mounting bracket for the frame bolts on the bottom. So now it bolts up to the frame and then into the body mounts, it will still be in front/below of the oil pan and extremely easy to pull out if I need to drop the pan /forums/images/graemlins/waytogo.gif

- with those two things fixed I took some paint thinner to the yellow marker and spent about another 30minutes redrawing the setup on the opposite sides to have the main piece be solid and the front where I was going to cut it off and cap it will now the area where it was welded /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

SO, with a day down I've pulled the old crossmember out, mocked up version #1 on cardboard, erased version #2 and started version #3 to cut in the morning once I go over it again for details /forums/images/graemlins/whistling.gif /forums/images/graemlins/waytogo.gif

Once its cut, before I box it in, I'm going to bolt it up and drop my spare 350 down on there and check for clearences. See ya tomorrow /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

(then once the engine crossmember is done I'm yanking the front crossmember. I've already mocked up boxing the frame around the steering box and adding an extra frame section to the outside of the frame to double wall it, then adding in some cross braces between the sides, so the side to side force will be put on about a one foot square area on both sides, instead of just the steering box area. I may loose a little flex but I think the steering will be much tighter, esp when I add hydro assist! /forums/images/graemlins/waytogo.gif)

Re: question about crossover and engine xmember with 52\'s, started new xmember

looks like the torch worked out pretty good huh??

Re: question about crossover and engine xmember with 52\'s, started new xmember

yeah after I spent 25minutes tearing the torch apart and cleaning it out, broke one of the reamers off inside the torch and had to pull it out the other side /forums/images/graemlins/doah.gif
the cutting fence worked out pretty well, I have a few other things I'm going to cut tomorrow /forums/images/graemlins/waytogo.gif

Re: question about crossover and engine xmember with 52\'s, started new xmember

are you welding with gas?? looks like it, not much slag, how thick is the stuff your welding??

Re: question about crossover and engine xmember with 52\'s, started new xmember

tube is 3/16" and the angle I welded in was 1/8", diamond plate is also 1/8". Running an 85amp Century welder with .030 wire and mixed argon. /forums/images/graemlins/waytogo.gif

/forums/images/graemlins/waytogo.gif thats why I wondered if you still had your template /forums/images/graemlins/whistling.gif
I had to make up my own template, mines going to bolt forward where yout tube goes under the motor mounts, mines going forward /forums/images/graemlins/dunno.gif

I like your steering brace also /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

FINISHED! PAINTED! BOLTED UP! I still need to charge up the drill and drill one more hole for the rear of the passengers side frame brace...

Factory crossmember was 7.5" from the top rail.
This crossmember is 8.375" from the top rail (I was shooting for 8" but I forgot to cut out the 3/8" for the frame braces).

Next on the list is a triagulated steering brace that bolts to the front of the engine crossmember and the back of the crossmember that holds the brake proportioning valve. /forums/images/graemlins/thinking.gif

More to come! /forums/images/graemlins/waytogo.gif
