What is my engine's designation? Like "LT-1" or whatever....stock 1974 5.7 V8 engine in a Blazer....or does it even have one? :dunno::dunno:
 
Just checked. Looks like it doesnt. You dont have the RPO codes in the glove box do you? Cause i think that would tell.
 
pretty sure it doesn't, I've never heard of one for a 70's run of the mill, pun intended, sb...

but I've certainly been proven wrong many times before too... :haha:
 
All I could find was a L48 option on cars and the earlier engines are just called gen1 small blocks. The Chevrolet small-block engine is a series of automobile V8 engines built by the Chevrolet Division of General Motors using the same basic small (for a V8) engine block. Retroactively referred to as the "Generation I" small-block, it is distinct from subsequent "Generation II" LT and "Generation III/IV" LS, and "Generation V" (LT/EcoTec3) engines. Engineer Ed Cole, who would later become GM President, is credited with leading the design for this engine. The gmc truck small block was called the Invader. Pretty sure not what you are looking for.

I will try to find it on the sticker in the glove box, but I guess that I can assume that it would be correct for me to say when asked, "It is a Gen 1 small block"?:dunno:
 
it's not like it's ever gonna be used for anything in the real world, or honestly that anyone's gonna know wtf your talking about, like if you said LT1.....

but I want to know....seems like all the corvette guys know and is a large topic of discussion....for example....what engine did you have in your Chevelle....I bet you know
 
my 71 had a LT1 transplant out of a vette.. but all the others, nope.. 396 done with 427 heads, a bunch of first gen sb's and such.. sure, if I had an original 70 with an LS6 that's worth a 100 g's, I'd know..

it's because they are vette guys, that's why.. #'s matching LT1 blah, blah blah sh*t... no offense Dave... :whistle: :haha:

I've NEVER been into that.. don't forget I started working at a resto shop at 19 for 5 yr's and did all #'s matching 427 4 speed vettes, buicks, yada.... it don't impress me and I consider the work easy... stock rebuild stuff is amateur IMO, paint some stuff, bolt stuff together... 0 creativity or skill.. I'm sure that'll offend the pee out of many, but it's the way I feel about it..

also, it really isn't gonna mean anything value-wise on your blazer imo... I'd be surprised if it's the original block anyway..

It is not the original block as it is a 1975 block...and I doubt there is any value to matching numbers on a Blazer, but I am sure it matters to a guy who is going to lay out a few hundred thousand for an original Vette.

I would agree that someone with your experience and skills that a resto would be a piece of cake....and to prove the point you were able to guide an amateur through the process of restoration...and though the process may be unimaginative it still takes dedication to detail and a dedication to put humpty dumpty together again.

That doesn't mean that restoration has no value...like preservation...let's take architecture for example...without preservation and restoration of historical buildings, the custom avant garde buildings have nothing to contrast with :D
 
I should postface that whole diatribe with a "on a professional level"

and I'm not demeaning stock resto stuff.. it certainly has it's place and I understand many like it on different levels from a childhood love affair to just liking stock stylings... and I certainly like and respect many stock looks..

I just have much more of an appreciation and respect for custom work/fab...

none taken Paul...I appreciate the level of attention given to 100 pt cars, Top Flights, etc. but not quite my bag!

I paid 3K for it in 82, had to replace the frame (repro's weren't available yet) and the original engine and trans, as well as many small numbered parts were gone. The 2nd owner tried to make it a 67 with the body mods, so I didn't really feel like going the full Numbers Matching Resto. I've always loved the body style, and I'm a hot rodder, so I'm having it the way I want it. Just because so many people ask if its the original engine...after having it decked when the machine work was done, I stamped fu*k off on the engine pad. I've had a few lookers at car shows looking for the numbers, then they stand up straight and look at me with a very puzzled look on their face.....yep thats there for you pal.

I just kinda know waaaaaay too many guys over the yr's that think that sh*t is the be all, end all... couldn't build/fab/create a damn thing in a 100 yr's, but think their #'s matching thing is all that matters...

I've had plenty of those douchenozzles come up to me at a car show and poo poo some Malibu that I hot-rodded out cuz it wasn't #'s matching and all original.. yet, they pay people to do just about everything on their car from paint, to mill building...

yeah, I respect that :rolleyes:, anyone can spend money....
