Many years ago GM issued an alert that the fan blades on the 70s squarebody can separate. The original fan blades were riveted. GM issued a new part to replace the fan.

I stuck my finger over the back of my fan shroud in the old Monza once, and about broke my damn fingers :doah:.
I was trying to lean over the engine and look at something on the carb.
That's how I found out you gotta stick em in from the radiator side, or straight down from the top to cut em off.

lesson learned. Once and done lol.

Who has seen a GM fan chuck a blade without some preceding damage?
Me
Blade almost made it all the way thru a 72 C30 hood. I considered myself lucky it did not take out the radiator.
Engine and fan were from a early 80s truck if I remember correctly. Zero warning, not abused and appeared damn near new when installed a few month's before.

I’ve heard of aftermarket flex fans coming apart but not a GM fan.

It is just an advisory warning from GM from about 20 years ago. I don't recall what the new part number is. The new engine fan that GM used for the replacement did not have rivited fan blades.

Yikes. How did you hear about the GM warning on these fan blades?

The C30 was one of my tow trucks in the late 80s. One of my customers {local mom & pop garage} noticed the gash in the hood and new right away what happened. Said he had seen a couple that were even more damage.

btw - Does your pop up K5 camper have running water and a stove?

Yes on both. The one currently on my Crawlabago also has a radiant style propane heater but the other two I have both have forced air propane heaters.
