1/2 ton status
Well completely not K5 related, but I've come to trust the opinions of the K5 family, so here goes. Don't roast me!
Spent the last couple years helping a buddy of mine rebuild a 68 Bronco. 289/C4/D20, all rebuilt, now has a 9" upgraded locked rear and a D44 front. All that damn F$@# stuff has really hurt my head in between better projects on my buddies' Chevs.
Long story short, drowned his engine and tranny. C4 is toast and the 289 has some pretty crazy noise coming out of it. There maaaay have been a little "nah it's not that deep" coming from me, but that's neither here nor there.
Between the group we've narrowed it down to three options to get him on the road again, and I thought you guys would have some good input considering you probably hate working on the f stuff as much as I do. Luckily we have a very good fabricator in the family, so gives us some flexibility.
Option 1 - 351W
As it happens buddy has a 351W and C6 sitting in his garage. Condition unknown. We've since stripped the engine and it's not bad. Needs a little machining, hone or small bore, turn the crank, bearings, pistons, etc. We'd already ordered everything we need to put it back together before we thought about it much more and they're waiting for pickup but we're trying to decide if we should return them and go another way.
Engine - Here, but parts total around $1200 (cam/timing set, dis, gaskets, intake, etc etc etc)
Machining - Estimated around $1000 for machining, pistons, and lower assembly (gets warranty)
Transmission - Unknown condition, est $1000 for rebuild of C6
Transfer case - Need to source round pattern ford 205, probably $300ish
Eventually TBI - $2000
Total without TBI - $3500
Total with TBI - $5500
Option 2 - New Chev 350 drivetrain
Engine - New crate 350, basic, $1500-2000
Intake and accessories - Very low est $500
Transmission - probably pick up a rebuilt th400 or 700r4, have core, $1000
Misc - $500 (fuel lines, odds and ends, steel, etc)
Transfer case - 205 probably, $300ish
Eventually TBI - $2000
Total without TBI - $3800-4300
Total with TBI - $5800-6300
Option 3 - Used Chev drivetrain
Proposed looking for a donor truck. A mid 90s half or 3/4 ton Chev that I can test drive that's running decent and has a tranny that doesn't need an immediate rebuild. Already has TBI that I just need to adapt the wiring in (lots of time on my part, but free). Obviously these numbers are fairly optimistic.
Truck - $1000-1500 (quite a few around at the moment)
Engine basic fresh - $500
Misc - $500
Total with TBI - $2000-2500
Which way would you guys go?
Here's the disaster of a truck and its owner. I know you guys like seeing the grill we're talking about!
